They had their chances late, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team came up just shy of taking a road victory in a 52-48 loss to the UFV Cascades Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

Olena Vasylenko was the game's leading scorer with 15 points and three steals for TRU. Morgan Eichenberger added 10 points and eight rebounds. Sydney Vollrath chipped in nine points while Hailey Merrigan scored eight points and finished with 13 rebounds.
Both Fania Taylor and Julia Tuchscherer had 11 points to lead the Cascades.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Vasylenko led the way early for TRU with six points in the opening frame. The two teams traded buckets throughout the opening ten minutes and a Vollrath layup in the final minute saw TRU trailing just 17-15 after the first quarter.
A strong second quarter from the hosts allowed them to stretch that advantage to 33-26 at the halftime break. Vasylenko scored five points in the frame for TRU.
The WolfPack erased that deficit in the third as Vollrath led the charge with seven points in the quarter. After consistently chipping into the Cascades' lead throughout the frame Vollrath knocked down a jumper with 40 seconds left to send the teams into the fourth quarter knotted up at 43-43.
A low-scoring fourth saw the Cascades eke out the victory. A Vasylenko bucket with three minutes left to go kept the 'Pack within two but that would be the last point TRU scored in the fourth with UFV holding on for the 52-48 win.

NOTABLE

The teams entered the weekend tied in the standings and the result moves UFV to 4-6 while TRU falls to 3-7.
While victory eluded TRU the result marks another step forward for the young squad. This was the first time TRU finished within 30 points of the Cascades since 2022.
