Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack take down Griffins for first win of 2025-26 CW campaign

QUICK FIRE
  • It's win number one on the year for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball squad that used a balanced scoring effort to topple the MacEwan Griffins by a tally of 60-53 in Edmonton Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kylee Koppes went a sparkling 13-16 from the charity stripe en route to tallying a team-high 17 points for TRU. Morgan Eichenberger recorded her first double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Olena Vasylenko added 11points and eight rebounds while Hailey Merrigan scored nine points of her own.
  • Unity Obasuyi was the story for the Griffins with 20 points on the night. Toni Gordon chipped in with 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack jumped out to an early lead after the first quarter. Merrigan was 2-3 from the floor to tally a team-high six points.  Lockdown defence from TRU forced MacEwan into making eight turnovers as the WolfPack led 15-7 through the first ten minutes of play.
  • A three-pointer from Morgan Eichenberger halfway through the second quarter stretched that WolfPack lead to 13 before MacEwan started to claw back. The Griffins went on a quick 9-2 run down the stretch before Allison Hansen knocked down a jumper with 30 seconds left in the half to send TRU into the break with a 30-24 edge.
  • The Griffins kept pushing and outscored TRU 14-7 to start the third quarter and take their first lead since early in the night at 38-37. The WolfPack were able to find another gear though and finished the frame with buckets from Olivia Randall, Vasylenko and Maddy Hackman to lead 44-40 after three quarters.
  • After a MacEwan three-pointer got the hosts to within one with seven minutes left to go, the WolfPack controlled the rest of the game. Koppes and Vasylenko keyed a 13-7 TRU run to end the game with six points apiece as the 'Pack pulled out the seven point victory.

NOTABLE
  • Koppes' 17 points were a new career-high for the former South Kamloops Titan.
  • TRU moves to 1-3 on the year with the win and also match their win total from the entirely of last season.

UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will do battle again tomorrow afternoon when they face off in Edmonton at 2:00 p.m. PT.
