WolfPack secure Presidents’ Cup with dominant win over Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team put an exclamation mark on a weekend sweep of the UBC Okanagan Heat with an 89-68 victory in Kelowna Saturday afternoon.
  • With the win, TRU secures the 2024-25 men's Presidents' Cup – an annual battle between TRU and UBCO that takes into account their head-to-head matches in soccer, volleyball and basketball.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • The WolfPack's offence couldn't have been more balanced on the day with six players hitting double-digits in scoring and two more just narrowly missing out. Asher Mayan, Cyrus Harrison and Thomas Olsen all had 12 while Simon Crossfield recorded 11 with both Reuben Wright and Steve Stinson adding ten.
  • Isaak Moore had a game-high 16 points for UBCO while Jalen Shirley added 13 and six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU came out of the gates on fire to start the match. The WolfPack shot 71 per cent as a team in the opening quarter as eight different players found the hoop for TRU. Olsen led the way with eight points for TRU as the visitors jumped out to a dominant 34-10 edge heading into the second.
  • While the WolfPack's hot hand cooled off a bit in the second frame, they managed to extend their lead to extend the lead to 29 points heading into the halftime break. TRU snagged seven offensive rebounds in the quarter with both Crossfield and Harrison scoring six points to lead the way.
  • The third quarter saw the teams maintain status quo with both tallying 16 points. Reuben Wright led the way with six points as the 'Pack held a 71-42 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.
  • From there TRU was able to see out the remainder of the game to secure the comfortable 21-point victory.
NOTABLE
  • The win secures the 2024-25 men's Presidents' Cup for the WolfPack. A battle between TRU and UBCO, this is the second year in a row that TRU has taken bragging rights on the men's side.
  • TRU moves to 10-8 on the season, currently good enough for third place in the Pacific division although at the time writing TWU (8-7) holds three games in hand.
  • The WolfPack's four-game winning streak is their longest in regular season play since they won five straight spanning from November of 2022 to January of 2023.
UP NEXT
  • TRU will play their final games of their regular season on the road next weekend when they head to Victoria to take on the first place UVic Vikes.
