Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

Dominant effort leads WolfPack to impressive win over Bobcats

QUICK FIRE
  • Everything was clicking for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team Friday night in the TCC as they romped to an impressive 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-16) win over the visiting Brandon Bobcats.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Keira Gent led the 'Pack with a game-high nine kills to go along with an ace. Maria Dancheva tallied eight kills, two digs and two blocks on the scoresheet. Brooklyn Olfert's game from the service line left nothing to be desired as the outside hitter had a trio of service aces to go along with her seven kills. Rida Erlalelitepe had a trio of service aces herself to go along with her 11 digs, four kills and two blocks. Faith Christensen led the team defensively with five blocks to go along with her three kills and two digs.
  • Megan Pickford led the scoring for the Bobcats with a team-high five kills to go along with three digs and a solo block. Avery Burgar added six digs, three kills and a pair of aces to Brandon's scoresheet. Carly Thomson had 10 assists, four digs and her own pair of aces that opened up the Bobcat's scoring game. Nerissa Dyer led the defensive game with four blocks, two digs and two kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandon came out swinging as Thomson opened the game with back-to-back aces. The WolfPack quickly responded with a series of runs that saw back-to-back aces from Olfert and two aces courtesy of Myah Cressy, one punctuating a 5-0 run that got the 'Pack to set point. Gent led the scoring game for the WolfPack with four kills as the hosts took the first set 25-11.
  • It was more of the same in the second. The frame opened with a solo block from Erlalelitepe to deny the Bobcats as the WolfPack continued the momentum with a series of 3-0 runs, including back-to-back kills from Gent. A block from Lucy Millam and Dancheva gave TRU an 11-point lead after a 5-0 run which led the 'Pack to taking the second set 25-15.
  • The WolfPack carried their offensive dominance into the third set, starting off with 6-1 run that featured an ace from Erlalelitepe. After a quick timeout, Brandon came back in the third with some newfound energy as they went on two quick runs thanks to back-to-back aces from Burgar, to bring the lead down to a single point at 12-11. The 'Pack were able to find their momentum again and go on some runs of their own, started off by two back-to-back kills from Dancheva, followed up by an ace from Gent. Olfert had two kills, including the match-point, in the final 6-0 run that saw the WolfPack take the third 25-16.

NOTABLE
  • The win moves the Thompson Rivers up to 12-7 and drops the Brandon Bobcats down to 2-17. TRU moves into fifth place in the conference with the result.
  • The WolfPack had nine collective aces as a team tonight with three from both Olfert and Erlalelitepe, two from Cressy and one from Keira Gent.
  • TRU put up 15 blocks as a team compared to Brandon's seven.
  • TRU is now 8-1 at home this season.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "Generally I thought we did a pretty good job of sticking to the gameplan. I thought our block defence was fairly good and we followed what we wanted to do in the service game."
  • "We always want to try and take some pressure off our left sides and get out middles more involved and our middles had some significant attempts so in that sense getting our offence to the point we want was important."
UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle in the regular season finale tomorrow, February 15th at 4:45 p.m. in the Tournament Capital Centre.
