Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack come within seconds of earning first victory of 2025

QUICK FIRE
  • They led well after the 90-minute mark, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team just couldn't hold the Lethbridge Pronghorns off the scoreboard in a 1-1 tie Friday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Marcus D'Andrea put up a strong defensive effort all over the field and was the sole goal scorer for the WolfPack. Abdel Coulibaly supplied the assist on D'Andrea's goal while Luca Ortu recorded four saves in the match.
  • Kai Sakaguchi was the lone goal scorer for the Pronghorns with an assist coming from Xander McIntyre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Thompson Rivers tested the Lethbridge goalie, Tegan Romaine, right off the bat. Matheus Lucas fired the first shot on net in the fifth minute of the game but Romaine was able to get his body behind the ball to make the save for the Pronghorns.
  • The Pronghorns had their best chance to score in the first half in the 15th minute of play. Bronson Schlichter nodded a header towards the WolfPack from a corner kick but Ortu was able to steer the effort wide.
  • The WolfPack put up a solid defensive effort to keep the Pronghorns scoreless after a trio of corner kicks, spearheaded by Minwoo Kang and Stephano Rettis-Martinez. Both teams went into halftime break scoreless.
  • TRU opened up the scoring just a minute into the second half. Coulibaly forced a turnover just inside the halfway line before sending a pass to D'Andrea. From there the second-year winger unleashed a left-footed blast from just outside the 18-yard box that flew into the back of the net.
  • Ortu was able to hold off the Pronghorns for most of the second half, making two beautiful saves back-to-back in the latter stages of the game.
  • While the clock crossed the 90-minute mark, the WolfPack were unable to keep Lethbridge from equalizing with a last gasp goal. McIntyre sent in a corner kick that found the head of Sakaguchi and the forward made no mistake to tie the game with nearly no time remaining.
NOTABLE
  • D'Andrea's goal was the first in the WolfPack career of the 2024 Canada West All-Rookie Team member.
  • The tie was TRU's first point of the season as they now hold a record of 0-6-1. Lethbridge meanwhile moves to 1-1-3.

UP NEXT
