Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Rock-solid WolfPack effort comes just shy of earning point on the road

QUICK FIRE
  • They were nearly perfect defensively on the day but an untimely bounce doomed the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team in a 1-0 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears Sunday.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half solved nothing. TRU had the better of the play early on and found their best chance of the half in the 38th minute but Will's effort towards goal was blocked by a leaping Alberta defender. Despite not being forced to make an official stop in the frame, Rutherford was strong in coming out of his net to claim crosses on multiple occasions.
  • The home team started to work their way into the game in the second half and found the breakthrough tally with just ten minutes left to play.
  • A ball played into the TRU box was nearly cleared multiple times, but a series of unfortunate bounces resulted in it falling to a wide-open Ferraro who tucked it into the net.
  • The WolfPack did their best to respond just seconds after conceding. Kaleb Voth went on a great run down the right wing and crossed the ball to an open Will but his diving header went just wide.
  • TRU kept pushing down the stretch with Will and Abdel Coulibaly nearly linking up for the equalizer in stoppage time but they just couldn't quite connect.

NOTABLE
  • TRU drops to 1-8-1 on the season with the result.
  • In two games on their Albertan road trip the WolfPack allowed just two shots on goal (none yesterday and two today).
  • The game was WolfPack head coach John Antulov's 150th Canada West regular season contest with TRU.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "I'm proud of the performance, Alberta is one of the top teams in the league and for us to come in and go toe-to-toe with them is great. Defensively it was an outstanding effort, I couldn't have asked for more."
  • "It's not just the backline, the whole team is working together as a unit. We are making the right decisions and playing more physical. It's one of those things where the young guys are starting to figure things out, to trust their instincts as defenders, to win one vs. one battles and it's going really well."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back on the road next weekend as they head to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island for a game with the Thunderbirds on Friday night (7:00 p.m.) and the UVic Vikes on Saturday (7:15 p.m.). That action can be watched live on canadawest.tv
