Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Snake-bitten WolfPack go toe-to-toe with No. 1 UBC

QUICK FIRE
  • Another outstanding effort on the road from the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team won't be rewarded in the standings as the 'Pack fell by a score of 2-0 to the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Matheus Lucas drove the way forward for the 'Pack with a great game in the middle of the pitch. Lachlan Will fired a pair of shots on goal with Abdel Coulibaly supplying another.
  • Nicolas Nadeau and Oliver Herbert scored for UBC with Herbert's goal coming deep into the extra time with the WolfPack sending nearly everyone forward in search of an equalizer. Roko Vucic made three saves for the shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC opened the scoring just minutes into the game as Nadeau placed a free-kick perfectly into the corner of the net from just outside the 18-yard box.
  • The WolfPack rebounded from that early setback and worked their way back into the game throughout the remainder of the first half. They nearly tied the game in the ninth minute of play when a cross from Marcus D'Andrea fell to Ben Finley but the first-year forward's blast went high over the net.
  • TRU dominated much of the second half and were incredibly unlucky not to score from a trio of chances an hour into the game. Will had a pair of shots in the 60th and 61st minutes but a combination of Vucic and the post kept TRU off the scoresheet.
  • The 'Pack's best chance to equalize came in the 87th minute of play when Lucas found a charging Coulibaly at the back post but his strong strike was stopped by Vucic.
  • UBC's insurance marker came late into extra time as TRU committed nearly everyone forward to try and find the tying goal.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "After they scored early the guys just right away got ahold of the game and started fighting back. Defensively once again we were solid, their shots were from well outside."
  • "In the second half we changed up the formation, we wanted to get guys forward and the guys really responded. We really started hitting them in transition and their goalie made a couple really good saves. I just loved the way the guys fought and battled and worked together as a unit. That was the No. 1 team in Canada so for us to go toe-to-toe, especially in the second half, as a coach you can't really ask for more."
  • "We need to start putting the ball into the back of the net because we had chances. We easily could have made the game 1-1 and then you never know what happens after that."
  • "Matheus Lucas is really starting to grow for us. You can really see him starting to step up on both sides of the ball, he's been quite the revelation and will be a standout player for us going forwards. We have to get him in attacking situations a little more because he's done a really good job driving our offence. That gave other guys confidence like Abdel Coulibaly, Lachlan Will, Ben Finley and Kaleb Voth and they started working together as a group and those five really started to cause a lot of problems."
