Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack push No. 9 UBC the distance, fall just shy in final home game of the season

QUICK FIRE
  •  The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team hung tough with the Canada West Pacific Division leading UBC Thunderbirds, even leading in the final quarter, before ultimately failing 72-66 on Saturday night in Kamloops.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kylee Koppes and Olena Vasylenko led the charge for TRU. Vasylenko had 16 points, two rebounds and five assists. Koppes had 17 points, four rebounds, five assists, and five steals in the game. Morgan Eichenberger chipped in with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
  • Olivia Weekes was strong for UBC in the paint, putting up a game-high 18 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU mixed a heavy dose of zone-defense and a full-court press to limit the Thunderbirds offence in the first quarter, adding five steals and one block to lead 20-17 after the first 10 minutes. A rare Friday night off last night didn't impact Eichenberger who had seven points and three rebounds in the first quarter. Koppes added six points and three assists while Vasylenko nailed a deep three pointer early on to set the pace. UBC was led by Cassie Joli-Couer with six in the quarter.
  • The Thunderbirds began the second quarter on an 11-0 run to take the lead, but TRU would battle back to within four at recess with the score 39-35 UBC. Hailey Merrigan hit a three to end the run and shift momentum back for the 'Pack. TRU went on a 10-2 run of their own, featuring another deep three from Vasylenko and points in the paint from Eichberger and Koppes. At the half Eichenberger was led all scorers with 10, Vasylenko and Koppes had eight apiece.
  • Sydney Vollrath helped key an 11-1 run in the middle of the third quarter that saw TRU briefly retake the lead over UBC, but the T-Birds responded to lead by just two after three, 55-53. Vasylenko had six in the quarter for TRU, stretching her team-high to 14 in the game. Olivia Weekes secured a double-double, ending the frame with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • TRU was able to keep things close down the stretch including leading at 60-59 with five minutes left to play, but would eventually fall 72-66. Stella LaGrange hit the dagger three pointer to ice the contest in the final minute for UBC. Koppes delivered in the fourth, finishing with 17 points.

NOTABLE
  • TRU's record now sits at 6-10, sitting sixth in the Pacific Division, the 'Pack are just outside of playoff position with four games remaining.
  • Koppes tied her career-high with 17 points. She set that mark earlier this season versus MacEwan.
  • Saturday was the WolfPack's annual Shoot for the Cure game with the 'Pack raising funds alongside women's basketball teams across Canada for the Canadian Cancer Society

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have wrapped up their home calendar and are set to play the final four games of the regular season on the road. Next Thursday TRU takes on Trinity Western in Langley, before heading to the Island for a Saturday matchup with the UVIC Vikes.
