Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack battle back but can’t overcome Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men's basketball team were within two points late in the game but couldn't find victory on the road in an 80-70 defeat to the TWU Spartans in Langley.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jayden Stephens led the way for TRU with 14 points and seven rebounds. Rookie Cason Scott added 12 points and veteran Thomas Olsen 11.
  • Jack Vandenberg was effective for the Spartans with 23 points thanks in large part to going 5-8 from beyond-the-arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A strong start from the Spartans' offence saw the hosts lead by ten points after the first quarter. Scott and Stephens both hit threes early in the game as the teams traded points to a 9-9 tie, but the Spartans knocked down six three-pointers to TRU's two in the quarter en route to jumping out to a 27-17 lead.
  • The WolfPack bounced back to control the second frame. TRU outscored TWU 23-14 in the quarter including six apiece from Dami Farinloye and Thomas Olsen. A Scott three-pointer with 44 seconds left in the half gave TRU their first lead of the night and while Vandenberg responded, the WolfPack cut the Spartans' lead to just one point at the halftime whistle.
  • TRU kept that momentum rolling into a third quarter that saw them lead for much of the frame. Scott and Steve Stinson both had four points during an early WolfPack run but the Spartans finished the quarter on a 10-0 run to lead by six points heading into the fourth quarter.
  • With that deficit still at ten halfway through the final quarter, the WolfPack did their best to close the gap. Jaeden Bynoe knocked down back-to-back three-pointers followed by a Jayden Green layup powered an 8-0 WolfPack run that took less than a minute. That was as close as TRU would get on the night however as the Spartans were able to regain control of the game and see out the rest of the fourth quarter to claim the win.

NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 10-7 on the season where they sit in fourth place in the Pacific Division.
  • Leading the team with 14 points on the night, Jayden Stephens average of 18.8 points-per-game this season is the sixth-best single season average in program history.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will remain on the road as they head to the Island for a game against the UVic Vikes on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Victoria. That game gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
