Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack dominant in straight-sets victory over Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team were in command from beginning to end in a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) victory over the UFV Cascades Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Fifth-year outside hitter Rylan Ibbetson powered the 'Pack offence with 17 kills in the match. Merritt product Alex Howard added 10 kills while Daniel Hitchens had five blocks for TRU.
  • Roan McCarthy led UFV with 11 kills and Hudson Brandsma chipped in with six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A dominant finish to the first set sent TRU to a 25-18 victory. A 6-1 WolfPack run that featured two kills and a block from Ibbetson blew open what was a 14-14 match to a 20-15 WolfPack lead. From there, kills from Ibbetson and setter Walker Sodaro as well as a strong serving run from Drew Pike allowed TRU to see out the set. Both Ibbetson and middle Jakob Leinemann had five kills in the first.
  • The story was much the same in the second. With the set tied at 17-17 an ace from Pike keyed an 8-2 WolfPack run that also featured two kills from Ibbetson as well as a kill and block from Walker Sodaro that gave TRU the 25-19 set victory.
  • A much closer third set came right down to the wire. The Cascades held a 20-19 lead late before three-straight Ibbetson kills turned the tide and helped TRU take match point at 24-21. UFV fought off a pair of match points before Howard ended the night with his tenth kill of the game.

NOTABLE
  • The win moves the 'Pack to 5-8 on the season. With the result TRU jumps over the Brandon Bobcats for the final playoff spot in the Canada West conference.
  • The WolfPack won the battle at the net with 12 blocks to UFV's 6.
  • Ibbetson continued his march up the WolfPack record books in the game. His 17 kills moves him to 689 in his TRU career where he is seventh in program history and just seven behind Robin Schoebel for sixth.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will look to complete the weekend sweep tomorrow, Jan. 24, when they once again take on the Cascades at 4:45 p.m. inside the TCC.
