Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heartbreak for WolfPack as TWolves hold on in last-minute thriller

QUICK FIRE
  • A late goal combined with a last-second goal line clearance helped the UNBC Timberwolves pick up a 1-0 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Toran Rutherford made five stops and had a shot on net for the WolfPack with Kaelin Nguyen adding a pair of shots on target.
  • Hagon Kim scored the lone goal of the game for the Timberwolves with Callum Cuthbert making a pair of saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rutherford came up big early for the 'Pack, making a diving stop off a shot from Mehdi Bounaaja four minutes into the contest.
  • From there the WolfPack took back momentum and had a chance to open the scoring in the 12th minute from the penalty spot but the shot went just over the crossbar.
  • The 'Pack kept pushing and had another quality chance to open the scoring late in the first half when Nguyen beat a trio of TWolves defender in the 43rd minute but his shot from the edge of the 18-yard box was parried by Cuthbert.
  • Rutherford made a pair of saves in the 52nd and 59th minutes of play to keep the game knotted up at 0-0 before it all became frantic late.
  • With just 30 seconds left in regulation time, Kim sent a long free-kick into the box that caught the wind and found the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack immediately began pushing for the equalizer and had multiple close calls in the box before some heroic defending from UNBC sealed the match.
  • A TRU corner kick in the 94th minute fell right into the path of the goalkeeper Rutherford who joined the attack and while Rutherford caught his volley pure and powered it towards goal, a UNBC defender on the goal line was able to stick his foot out and stop the shot in what was the final kick of the game.

NOTABLE
  • With four games left to play in the season, the result moves the WolfPack to a record of 6-5 where they occupy the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
  • Holding a winning percentage of .545 per cent, the 'Pack are ahead of a 4-6-2 TWU Spartans team that they will play twice in their last four games of the season.

UP NEXT
  • The last road trip of the regular season is ahead next weekend for a WolfPack squad that will head the Lower Mainland to face the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Friday and the TWU Spartans on Saturday. The game against UBC starts at 7:30 p.m. and the game against TWU will go at 7:15 p.m. Both games can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
