Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack snap UBC’s 44-game winning streak with hard-fought draw

QUICK FIRE
  • A complete team effort allowed the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's team to do what no team had done in 44-straight games as they played the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds to a 1-1 draw in Vancouver.
  • UBC entered the contest as winners of their last 44-consecutive regular season matches, a streak that started Oct. 6, 2023.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Victoria product Joss Olcen scored a wonder-volley for the first goal of her WolfPack career with Makenna Ford tallying the assist. WolfPack goalkeeper Floor Ursem made six saves to preserve the draw.
  • Sophia Ferreira scored the goal for the Thunderbirds with Bailey Doerksen supplying the assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC got the scoring started through Ferreira just eight minutes into the game with a header from a corner kick.
  • From there the WolfPack were able to settle into the game and five saves from Ursem throughout the rest of the half sent the teams into the break with the score 1-0 in favour of the hosts.
  • The WolfPack flipped the script in the second half, taking control of the run of play and attacking time and time again.
  • That persistence finally paid off in the 70th minute. Ford sailed a corner kick to back of the 18-yard box where Olcen met it first time and volleyed a shot that sailed over the UBC goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
  • Both teams pushed for the game-winner but stout defence from the 'Pack and a couple more saves from Ursem kept the score 0-0 at the end of the game.

NOTABLE
  • The result was a crucial one for a WolfPack team fighting for second-place in the Pacific Division and the home playoff game that comes with it. TRU is now 6-1-4 on the season, good enough for 22 points. Right behind the 'Pack are their next opponents, the TWU Spartans, who are 6-3-2 with 20 points. The two teams have just three games left to play this season and two of those are against each other.
  • With Olcen's goal and Ford's assist, the WolfPack have now had nine different players register a point this season.
  • With one goal in their last two games against UBC, TRU is the only team to score against the Thunderbirds in their last 27 regular season games.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)
  • "We were super disappointed to concede the goal we did from the corner kick but they dug in – especially in the second half we changed a little bit tactically and were able to get after them a bit more."
  • "Sophie Flannery came in for her first minutes as a WolfPack player and I thought she did really well, she won fight after fight in the bottom of the midfield and showed that she can really have an impact not only at this level but against the No. 1 team in the country. Joss Olcen worked her socks off. Everybody stepped up and we were really happy with the energy in the second half."
  • "We are obviously super excited to get a point, but the challenge is now that we have a difficult game tomorrow that we have to try and get ready to go compete against TWU."
  • "It's really difficult to single anybody out, everybody put in a shift and worked incredibly hard, and you have to against a team like UBC. I could list literally all 17 players that played tonight as having a big influence on the game. We are really proud of the work of the group and how far they've come."
  • "I think the biggest thing we take away from this game is some belief that we can compete with the top teams in the country as we go into a playoff push here. Hopefully they can continue and use this as fuel moving forward."
  • ON THE MESSAGE BEFORE TOMORROW'S GAME "The message right now is to recover, reload and reset for tomorrow and do our best to go again against another really good team. It's a really important game as we fight for second in the division and try to give ourselves a playoff game at home."

UP NEXT
  • Another crucial game is ahead tomorrow, Oct. 17, for the WolfPack when they face the TWU Spartans in Langley in a contest that gets underway at 5:00 p.m. That action can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
