Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack clinch playoff spot with commanding victory over Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • In control of the game from start to finish, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team punched their ticket to the Canada West postseason with a 3-1 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Three different players found the back of the net for the WolfPack. Alesandro Comita tallied in his return from injury, Noel Poole scored his second in as many games while Liam Freathy scored the first of his WolfPack career. James Rainbird had a pair of assists in the game with rookie Aiden Muzio supplying the other.
  • Mosi Klusman scored for the Heat while Ronan Woodroffe was under siege in the Heat net, making ten stops in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Some great stops by Woodroffe was the only thing keeping the WolfPack off the board early before they finally found a crack in the 25th minute.
  • James Rainbird played a ball to Alesandro Comita on the edge of the 18-yard box and from there the Kamloops product took one touch onto his left foot and unleashed a rocket of a shot that curled into the far bottom corner.
  • The WolfPack doubled that lead just three minutes later.
  • It was a Kamloops to Kamloops connection as rookie Aiden Muzio played a perfect pass behind the defence and right to a streaking Poole who needed just one touch to direct the ball past a sprawling Woodroffe.
  • That two goal lead was incredibly short-lived however as Klusman finished off a nice Heat passing play just two minutes later to send the teams into the halftime break with TRU up 2-1.
  • The WolfPack outshot UBCO 11-4 in the second in the half with Freathy supplying the insurance marker with a header off a Rainbird corner kick in the 57th minute.

NOTABLE
  • The win secures a return to the postseason for the first time since 2023 for WolfPack. Now with a record of 7-6-1 they are securely in fourth place position with fifth place TWU (5-7-3) unable to catch them.
  • The victory gives TRU a season sweep over UBCO and secures another point in the Presidents' Cup standings between the two schools. The WolfPack are vying to claim the men's Presidents' Cup for fourth-consecutive year.
  • TRU outshot UBCO 25-5 on the night.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, John Antulov)
  • "It was really good to see the offence clicking. Aiden Muzio, Noel Poole, Alesandro Comita and Ben Finley were really getting in behind them and putting them under pressure, especially in that first half when their goalkeeper had to come up big on a couple occasions to keep it close.
  • "Obviously happy to get the result, our first goal this year was to make the playoffs and then just continue to work from there. To be able to achieve that first goal is significant and I'm just happy with the way the guys played."

UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will wrap up their regular season slate tomorrow night inside Hillside Stadium when they take on the TWU Spartans at 7:30 p.m. After the game the WolfPack will honour graduating student-athletes, and brothers, Alesandro and Domenico Comita.
