Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack fall to Cougars in 2026-27 opener

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team battled back to take the third but couldn't find a way past the MRU Cougars in a 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18) loss to open their season Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was a pair of rookies leading the WolfPack in kills in the game as Mostafa Tayea and Elliot Rourke topped the charts with 14 and seven respectively. Tayea also added a pair of aces and three block assists to finish the night with a team-high 17.5 points. Walker Sodaro had 32 assists while libero Brandon Johnson tallied nine digs.
  • Calum Stewart powered the Cougars' attack with 10 kills on 20 attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a slow start in the first set saw them fall 25-13, the WolfPack began to work their way back into the game in the second with a closer score of 25-21 before taking the third.
  • Hitting .333 per cent as a team in the set, by far their best percentage of the night, an 8-3 TRU run highlighted by three kills from Tayea gave the 'Pack a commanding 18-14 edge. A solo block from Rourke and two kills from Tayea late sent TRU to the 25-22 victory.
  • The WolfPack couldn't complete the comeback to force a fifth set however as the Cougars jumped out to a 17-12 lead they wouldn't surrender en route to the 25-18 victory.
NOTABLE
  • Tayea, Rourke, Owen Schmidt and Will Clarmo all made their WolfPack debuts in the game.
  • TRU entered the season ranked sixth in the CW coaches preseason poll while the Cougars were fourth.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack lead assistant coach Reece Wilson)
  • "Started out very slow in the first two sets. Lost the serve pass battle which didn't allow our offence to get going. Had a strong 3rd set after the passing stabilized which made it easier for our offence. Unfortunately, weren't able to carry that through the entire 4th set."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back in action against these very same Cougars in Calgary tomorrow evening in a game that gets underway at 4:00 p.m. PT.
