Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack's season comes to an end with close loss in CW Play-In game

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team fought back time and time again but couldn't quite close the deal in a 70-66 Canada West playoff game defeat to the Calgary Dinos Friday afternoon.
  • The loss brings an end to a great season for a WolfPack squad that earned the third-most regular season victories in program history with 12.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Cason Scott continued to play well beyond his years, pacing the 'Pack with 16 points in the game. Jayden Stephens added 15 points and seven rebounds while Dami Farinloye chipped in with13 points and Steve Stinson 10.
  • It was a balanced scoring attack for the Dinos with Hayden Franson (15 points), Daniels Baumanis (14), Dre Francis (12) and Mrigendra Dhaliwal (12) all hitting double-digits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack controlled the early portion of the game to hold a three-point lead after the opening ten minutes. Stinson struck from long-range twice in the opening four minutes of play to lead the WolfPack to a quick 10-4 advantage.  While Calgary did their best to claw back into the game, Stephens scored seven points in the frame with Scott adding four as the 'Pack led 19-16 through ten minutes of action.
  • Calgary dominated the second quarter en route to grabbing an 11-point lead at the half. Scott tallied a pair of quick layups to put TRU in front 25-16 with eight minutes left in the frame but from there on out it was all Dinos. Calgary held TRU scoreless for over three-and-a-half minutes as they went on a quick 15-0 run that completely turned the game on its head. Jaeden Bynoe hit a three to put an end to that run, but the Dinos led 42-31 at the halftime whistle.
  • A back-and-forth third quarter saw the Dinos head into the fourth with a ten-point lead. An 11-0 WolfPack run to start the frame that featured five points from Farinloye allowed the 'Pack to climb all the way back to within two points trailing 44-42. Calgary found an answer however, finishing the frame on a 10-2 run of their own to lead 54-44 heading into the fourth.
  • The WolfPack refused to go away, battling back in a fourth quarter that came right down to the wire. Five points from Bynoe, including a clutch three-pointer, in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the fourth helped TRU trim the Dinos' lead to 59-55. Once again, the Dinos found a response with a Dhaliwal three-pointer putting Calgary up by ten with just over four minutes left to play. Two quick buckets from Scott and one from Stephens brought the WolfPack right back into it with the score 67-63 in favour of the Dinos with one minute left to go. Baumanis knocked down a pair of free-throws to extend Calgary's lead before Farinloye struck back for the 'Pack. With just 12 seconds left to go the fourth-year guard from Winnipeg knocked down a contested three-pointer to make it a one-possession ballgame. That was as close as the 'Pack would come however as the Dinos were able to hold on for the 70-66 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The game was the final one in the WolfPack careers of graduating student-athletes Thomas Olsen and Gavin Reis.
