Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Ward leads WolfPack to straight-sets victory over Dinos

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team was in control from beginning to end in a dominant 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-20) victory over the Calgary Dinos Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kamloops' own Hail Ward the picture of efficiency on the night, finishing with a game-high 15 kills while hitting .542 per cent and also racking up a trio of blocks on her way to 18.5 points. In a return to her hometown of Calgary, Keira Gent added a further ten kills while middle Myah Cressy added six kills, two service aces and five block assists. Setter Libby Meldrum was all over the court for TRU with 31 assists, four service aces and three blocks.
  • Sophia Hansen finished with a team-high 11 kills for Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU set the tone for the night early, holding a large lead for much of the first set en route to the 25-19 victory. The WolfPack jumped out to a 10-5 edge early as they started the night with three blocks in the first 15 points. The Dinos did their best to battle back, cutting the lead to as few as three points multiple times, but in the end the 'Pack were too much as they pulled away for the 25-19 set victory. Ward finished the set with seven points, including the set-clinching kill.
  • The second set was pure dominance from TRU. The 'Pack hit .462 per cent as a team while holding Calgary to a mark of -.095 as they steamrolled their way to a 25-9 set victory.
  • While the Dinos kept things closer in the third, the WolfPack put the match away comfortably with a 25-20 victory. Down 17-14, the 'Pack ripped off a 6-0 run that saw a pair of blocks – one from Cressy and another from Rida Erlalelitepe - to take back the lead at 20-17. Gent ended the night with a big swing on match point to give TRU the 25-20 set win.

NOTABLE
  • Now with a record of 13-6 on the year, the WolfPack are fifth in the conference. The hope for TRU to host a first-ever playoff series in program history comes down to them defeating Calgary tomorrow and Manitoba (14-5) losing to Fraser Valley (9-5).
  • The WolfPack entered the weekend ranked sixth in the weekend.
  • The WolfPack won the battle at the net with 10 blocks to Calgary's 3 as well as on the service line where they fired down 9 aces to the Dinos' 3.
  • The 25-9 victory in the second is the second time this season that TRU has held an opponent to single digits in a set.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm
  • We had a pretty business-like approach tonight. I thought the girls were disciplined with the exception of kind of the first half of the third set, but overall I thought they did well.
  • We defended the ball well in the first set to work our way into the game. Our receivers passed the ball quite well and gave Libby a lot of opportunities to spread out our offence and make us difficult to defend.
  • Overall, I'm happy with the performance tonight.

UP NEXT
  • TRU's last game of the regular season will see them face these very same Dinos tomorrow (Feb. 14) at 3:00 p.m. PT.
