Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Merrigan sets new program record as WolfPack outlast Timberwolves

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team earned victory number seven of their 2025-26 Canada West campaign Friday afternoon as they took down the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 53-44 in Prince George.
  • Hailey Merrigan, a first-year forward from Australia, set a new program record with 20 rebounds in the game.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Merrigan's monumental effort on the glass saw the rookie grab 16 defensive and four offensive rebounds. The product of Melbourne, AUS also added 11 points, three blocks and three assists for a big night all over the court. Sydney Vollrath scored a team-high 14 points while Olena Vasylenko added nine assists on the night.
  • Hazel Phillips powered the TWolves with 15 points and six rebounds on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw the teams finish the opening ten minutes of action all knotted up at 15-15. It was the hosts that held a slim lead for much of the quarter, but Vollrath knocked down a late three-pointer – for three of her team-high five points – to tie the score back up.
  • A late WolfPack run in the second sent TRU into the halftime break with the lead. Trailing by seven points halfway through the second, Eichenberger spurred a 10-0 TRU run to end the frame with eight points on her own to give the 'Pack a 27-24 lead through the opening 20 minutes of play.
  • After a tight third quarter did nothing to separate the teams any further, the WolfPack pulled out the victory in the fourth. Rookie Paige Leahy set the tone early for TRU with a big three-pointer to put the 'Pack up 43-37. The WolfPack increased that lead to as many as 11 points and held UNBC to just eight points in the quarter en route to the 53-44 victory.

NOTABLE
  • With the win the WolfPack hit the seven-win mark for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
  • The 20 rebounds for Merrigan put her over the previous program high mark of 19 that was achieved three times. (Diane Schuetze – Nov. 5 vs. UFV, Diane Schuetze – Jan. 12 vs, CGY and Morgan Eichenberger – Nov. 8 vs GMU)
  • Vasylenko's nine assists matches her career-high and also ties for the sixth-most in a single game in program history.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will wrap up their 2025-26 season tomorrow evening in Prince George when they face the Timberwolves at 5:00 p.m. That game can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
