Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack suffer first defeat of 2026 campaign

QUICK FIRE
  • A trio of goals in the second half for the host UVic Vikes was too much for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team to overcome in a 4-0 defeat Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Matteo Lamon made six stops in the WolfPack net. Forward Kaelin Nguyen had two of the WolfPack's five shots on net in the contest.
  • Four different players found the back of the net for UVic and Callum Weir recorded the shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack and Vikes were back-and-forth in the early going of the game with Kaelin Nguyen forcing Vikes' goalkeeper Callum Weir into making a tough save 20 minutes into the contest.
  • Stolid defending and three strong saves from Lamon appeared to be enough to send the teams into the halftime break tied up at 0-0, before disaster struck for TRU right before the halftime whistle.
  • With Victoria pressing late, TRU blocked back-to-back shots from inside the 18-yard box. The referee judged one of those blocks to be off a TRU defender's arm and awarded a penalty shot that UVic's Jack Napier-Ganley sent into the back of the net.
  • TRU started the second half on the right foot with Ben Finley and Noel Poole putting the UVic defence under pressure, but an insurance marker from Evan Larson in the 62nd minute gave UVic the all-important second goal of the game. Both Connor Legge and Wesley Jones scored down the stretch for UVic to send the home team to victory.

NOTABLE
  • The loss was TRU's first defeat of the season and sends them to a record of 4-1 on the year.
  • The result will see the WolfPack and Vikes end their season series winning one game apiece after TRU opened the season on Aug. 27 with a 1-0 win over UVic.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "The end of the first half is going to be part of the learning curve for some of our guys. When you're playing good teams you can't make mistakes and we tried playing around with it right at the end of the half. Game management is important and it's different for us if we go into the half 0-0."
  • "I thought the guys came out in the second half for the first 20, 25 minutes and were good. When they got the second goal the guys' reaction disappointed me a little bit for the last 20 minutes."
  • "At the end of the day that's a good team and a good battle, we will have to deal with some adversity now. We've got a good squad too and I know the team is going to rebound and be ready to go for tomorrow."
  • ON REBOUNDING FOR TOMORROW "It's going to be a battle and a fight. I want to see a reaction from our group tomorrow and I told the guys that I need to see a reaction. A game like to tonight is part of the learning curve, it's a long season and you have to learn from it – it's all about how you react. I know the boys are going to be ready to go tomorrow."
UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will be back in action on the road again tomorrow evening when they travel to Abbotsford to face the UFV Cascades at 7:45 p.m.
