Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack strike first but fall to Cascades on the road

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team found the back of the net first but couldn't hold off the UFV Cascades in a 3-1 loss Saturday night in Abbotsford.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Third-year forward Lachlan Will scored his first goal of the 2026 Canada West campaign with Lucas Kirnon providing the assist. Matteo Lamon made four saves in the WolfPack net.
  • Aidan Fitzgerald, Michael Beecroft and Joaquim Dharamsi scored for the host Cascades.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was TRU that had a majority of the play early in the game and that pressure paid off when Will opened the scoring in the 30th minute. A James Rainbird corner kick was punched away by Matheus De Souza in the Cascades net but only as far as the edge of the 18-yard box where Kirnon settled the ball for Will who unleashed a precision effort that sailed over De Souza and into the top corner of the net.
  • UFV responded just seven minutes later. Ebi Igali took a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box that Lamon stopped but Fitzgerald was in the right place to send the rebound into the back of the net and send the teams into the halftime break with the score tied 1-1.
  • The Cascades took the lead on a scramble play in the WolfPack penalty area in the 58th minute with Beecroft poking the ball home.
  • TRU did their best to find an equalizer throughout the rest of the second half. Will had a pair of shots towards goal in a two-minute span with 20 minutes left to play but neither found the mark. Both Aiden Muzio and Francesco Rettis had shots on net down the stretch but it was the Cascades that scored the final goal of the game against the run of play after TRU had committed everyone forward trying to find the equalizer.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 4-2 on the season with the result and sit in a tie with the UVic Vikes for second in the Pacific Division.
  • Will's goal was his seventh in Canada West play for the product of West Vancouver. He sits just one back of tying Oriol Torres, Jan Pirretas Glasmacher and Patrick Izett for seventh in program history.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "I thought it was a good game. It was a good rebound from yesterday, we reacted really well. It was a couple unfortunate bounces on the first and second goal. The third goal we were pushing everybody forward so that's the risk. We were full value for the way we played and the result was a bit unfortunate."
  • "If you would have asked me at the start of the year if we could be 4-2 through these opening six games playing UVic and UFV twice I would have taken it all day. There's some real positives to take out of this first third of the season. It's not how you start, it's how you finish, so it's all about rebounding and keeping everyone positive. We are still in a really good situation after winning those first four games so we just have to take that and move forward with it."
UP NEXT
  • A bye week is ahead for a WolfPack team that will look to reset before hitting the road again for a Prairie Division swing trip that will see them play the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary on Sept. 25 and the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Sept. 27.
