Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Early goals against sink WolfPack in loss to Cougars

QUICK FIRE
  • The host Mount Royal Cougars tallied two goals early in the game to send them past the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team by a score of 2-0 Friday afternoon in Calgary.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The early portion of the game belonged to the hosts. Finn Marshall opened the scoring from the penalty spot just eight minutes into play while Jonathan Walter doubled the Cougars' lead just minutes later.
  • After struggling early the WolfPack worked their way back into the game throughout the remainder of the first half with TRU mounting pressure towards the MRU net late in the frame.
  • That run continued into the second half where TRU had their best chance to score. The newly-insterted Aiden Muzio played a great ball forward to fellow substitute Iravani who was in all alone but his chip effort was thwarted by Strauss.
  • Ghasemi had another chance down the stretch but TRU were unable to find a breakthrough in the defeat.

NOTABLE
  • Holding a record of 4-3 on the season, TRU remains in sole poseession of the second place in the Canada West Pacific Division.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "At the end of the day the first 20 minutes was not good. I felt the guys weren't ready to go and weren't working as a unit. We were playing against a good team and MRU has been in some battles the last few years and have a good squad. When you're not ready to play right from the get-go you get punished and that's what happened. I thought after 20-25 minutes we started to work our way back into the game and then the second half was much better."
  • "Aiden Muzio came in in the second half and was outstanding, he was definitely our player of the match. He made a real difference both on the defensive side of the ball and going forward in attack, he created some good scoring opportunities for us. I thought he came in and really balanced us out well. We made some wholesale changes at the half and I thought all the guys that came in for the second half played really well. You want to see your younger players who come into the game in difficult situations step up and they did that."
  • ON PLAYING SASKATCHEWAN ON SUNDAY "We just have to make sure everybody is ready to battle right from the jump. Saskatchewan is a good squad and having a good year so we have to make sure we are mentally focused and ready to go."

UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will continue their road trip with another day on the road before playing the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Sunday, Sept. 27 in a game that gets underway at 1:30 p.m. PT.
