Capturing every title they could, the 1975-76 Cariboo College women’s basketball team undoubtedly etched their names forever in school history. The group of eight student-athletes alongside head coach Ron Paulson and manager Elaine Gustafson put together a magical season that saw them set multiple firsts for the institution.

The first team in Cariboo College history to win a 4-West Championship, they earned their place as the top collegiate women’s basketball team from B.C. to Manitoba.

It was a dominant showing from the start, as the team began their season with a pair of exhibition victories over the University of Victoria before claiming the Lethbridge President’s Invitational Basketball tournament with wins over Lethbridge College and Rocky Mountain College.

After compiling a record of 18-3 in the regular season, they defeated Vancouver Community College by a score of 72-45 in the Totem Conference championship game to claim their second-straight B.C. provincial title.

Advancing to the 4-West Championship tournament, wins over the Kelsey Institute (72-53) and Red Deer College (65-49) gave the team the first Western Canadian title in school history. Agnes Balson led the team with 19 points and 24 rebounds in the championship game, followed by 13 points from Sue Vickers.

A team full of outstanding student-athletes, the 1975-76 Cariboo College women’s basketball team paved the way for future generations to shine and showed that this institution deserved to play on the national stage.
