Mike’s impact on the soccer community of Kamloops is immeasurable. He contributed to the growth of all aspects and levels of soccer, be it playing, coaching and officiating, and although a prominent figure in the Kamloops community, he was most notable for his contribution as coach of the UCC Sun Demons women’s soccer program.
Mike was awarded the BCCAA Coach of the Year five times and was three time CCAA National Coach of the Year, which was the most for any coach in CCAA history. When you add in three BCCAA Bronze medals, four BCCAA Silver medals and one BCCAA gold medal to go along with three CCAA National Silver Medals and one CCAA National Championship Gold, you see the impact Mike brought as a coach. Mike was also inducted into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
If you ask his former players and colleagues though, the biggest contribution Mike brought was in what he taught about life, particularly in living it to the fullest. The BCCAA renamed the fair play awards in Bartram’s honor, citing Mike’s “respect, courtesy and sportsmanship.” As a posthumous recognition, Mike is the first ever inductee in the coach category.
“UCC is basically my second home. If I look back that would be maybe the most important part. The best part of coaching is the family. The sport becomes secondary – it’s the long-lasting relationships. That’s my biggest memory of coaching at UCC.” – Mike Bartram
