Box Score For the first time in six years, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have scored against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West women's soccer.
With their playoff hopes on the line, the WolfPack jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Cascades. But in the end, the host UFV squad beat Thompson Rivers 4-2 on Friday night (Oct 18).
The WolfPack fall to 2-7-4 while The Cascades, who entered the match with a 1 point lead over TRU for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Canada West Pacific Division move to 3-5-5.
A nightmarish start for the Cascades was the stuff dreams are made of for the WolfPack. In the fourth minute, some physical play deep in UFV territory allowed TRU to claim possession. The ball was sent into the box where it went off the hands of Cascades keeper Andrea Perkovic, and
Camryn Curts (3
rd year, midfield, Courtney, BC) was there to hammer the loose ball home.
The WolfPack went up 2-0 in the 25th, as
Taylor Miller (5
th year, midfield, Kamloops, BC) ran onto a picture-perfect through ball from Curts and poked it past an on-rushing Perkovic.
But Fraser Valley captain Brittany Zaharchuk went to work after that, scoring twice and adding two assists.
Just one minute after Miller struck for the WolfPack's second goal, Zacharuk smashed home a shot from 14 yards out to get her team on the board. She subsequently set up goals by Kate Fisher and Katie Lampen to give the hosts a stunning 3-2 lead heading into the break. To top it all off, she notched the insurance marker in the second half.
Zacharuk's outburst gave her sole possession of the Cascades' all-time points record – she'd come into the night tied with Monika Levarsky (2014-2016) on 36 career points, and ended it on 40.
"I think Brittney showed a couple things tonight," UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht said. "She showed her competitiveness – being down 2-0, you heard her on the park asking more of her teammates, and when the ball came to her in the box, there was no doubt it was going into the back of the net. She scores the first for us and sets us our next two, and she shows her quality. And just her character – she shows up in big games.
"We came out and we had a lot of fight in us – a lot of jump in our step," WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington said afterward "We were really good, and I thought deservedly a couple goals up. Then we handed them a lifeline straightaway, which wasn't ideal for them to get right back into it. It gave them a little bit of hope."
Fraser Valley had 19 shots in the contest including 10 in the second half. The Pack had 10 shots: five in each half.
Danielle Robertson (3
rd year, keeper, Courtenay, BC) had eight saves—four in each half.
The WolfPack wrap up the regular season on Saturday (Oct 19) with a match against the Spartans at Trinity Western. Fraser Valley closes out the season at home against UBCO.
