The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's soccer team will head into the 2019 Canada West regular season on a winning note.
The WolfPack ended their preseason with a 4-1 win over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday (Aug 24). The match was played at a tournament in Regina. The Pack finished the tourney at 1-2 and had an overall 'friendly' record of .500 (3-3).
Thompson Rivers came back from a 1-0 deficit to lead at the half 2-1. WolfPack goals came off the feet of
Camryn Curts (3
rd year, midfield, Courtenay, BC),
Chantal Gammie (2
nd year, forward, Smithers, BC),
Robin Price (4
th year, midfield, Smithers, BC) and Emily Clark (1
st year, forward, Kamloops, BC).
Clark is a South Kamloops Secondary grad who is trying out for the WolfPack after playing her minor soccer with the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association.
"Really good to come away with a really solid victory today, "said Thompson Rivers head coach
Mark Pennington. "I think the result matched our performance. We got the result we deserved. I thought the previous two games didn't match the performance we put in. I thought we deserved a better fate in those matches quite frankly. I am happy with how the trip went. I learned a lot about the players. Gives me some selection headachers going into the season which isn't a bad thing as a coach."
Pennington continued, "We had a trial player here this weekend. She had a goal and an assist in essentially her first outing with the team. She is obviously eager to be on the squad. She had a solid effort in this match and will give me a lot to think about. Some really bright moments from her as form everybody.
Rookie keeper Mae Hobenshield ( Port Coquitlam, BC) went the distance in goal. Pennington said she looked solid throughout.
Pennington added, " I thought
Chantal Gammie and
Camryn Curts' work rate and athleticism were a real positive. They caused problems for the other team all day.
Robin Price scored an unbelievable goal. A worthy goal in any standard of soccer. It was a good end to a good roadtrip. Lots of positives moving forward. The players were resilient today after being down a goal. To score four goals and barring some saves by their keeper it could have been more. We have moved closer to where we want to be for the coming season."
The coach stated, " We set some different challenges for them today. Winning first balls in the air, creating a certain amount of goal chances during the game and trying to cut down on unforced errors. To be honest the girls completed those challenges. That was a big plus as well. We scored two goals today from set pieces. That is something we talked about as a group and did a lot of practice on that. To get goals on something you worked on shows a big positive. The players have bought into the set up for the set pieces. I am really pleased with that. We will assess the knocks and scrapes we picked up—which is normal for three matches in three days. We have one more scrimmage left. We will do some more polishing up before we start playing for real."
The WolfPack have almost two weeks off to prepare for the Canada West regular season opener. It is Thursday, September 5
th in Prince George, BC when they visit the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. On Sunday, September 7
th, they meet the Dinos at the University of Calgary before returning home on Friday, September 13
