WolfPack MVB wind up exhibition tournament with big win

EDMONTON, AB—A good way to end the weekend. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's volleyball team ended their first weekend of exhibition play with a victory.
The Pack were playing at the FOG Volleyball tournament at the Saville Community Center in Edmonton this weekend. On the final day of competition (Sat Sept 21), the WolfPack went .500
After dropping a five set decision earlier in the day to the SAIT Trojans of the Alberta College Athletic Conference, the WolfPack needed five set to beat another Calgary, Alberta squad: the University of Calgary Dinos. The scores were25-14,18-25,25-21,22-25, 16-14.
Against NAIT, the scores were 17-25,25-20,25-18,23-25,8-15.
In the Calgary match, TRU was led by Nimo Benne (1
st year, outside hitter, Castricum, Netherlands) with 14 kills and
Charlie Bringloe (5
th year, outside hitter, Waterloo, ON). Both hit over 300 in kill efficiency and both had four service aces. Corbin Ockerman ( 1
st year, middle,Elk Point, aB ) seeing his first varsity match had three kills, two blocks and two aces.
Fellow rookie Brody Kopec (1
st year, outside hitter, Red Deer, AB) had five kills and two blocks. Libero
Landon Currie was praised by Hennelly for his excellent passing.
"We had a nice 17-13 lead in the fourth set and lost focus," he said. "Credit to Calgary who put pressure on us with defensive intensity."
Reviewing the morning match with SAIT, Kobby Nyarko (1
st year, outside hitter, Calgary, AB) had 13 kills. Cole Johnston (1
st year, middle Prince George, BC) had eight kills. Dylan Vanspankeren (1
st year,libero, Calgary, AB) had 12 digs. That match saw Kyle Mckee (1
st year, outside hitter, Prince George, BC) and Joey Goulet Jones (1
st year outside hitter, Langley, BC ) seeing their first matches.
"That one was very up and down," Hennelly said. "Both sides went for long runs. We battled hard in the third set but lost focus in much of the fourth and fifth."
Thompson Rivers wound up the weekend with a 1-4 record.
Looking at the five matches his club played, Hennelly said, " Overall, excellent weekend with lots of experience and a shopping list of skills to work on."
The WolfPack are on the road next weekend playing matches in Langley and at UBC.
