Fraser sends WolfPack over Spartans with last-minute winner

KAMLOOPS – Another game, another dramatic finish for a WolfPack men's soccer team that claimed a 1-0 victory over the visiting Trinity Western Spartans Saturday night.

Fifth-year forward James Fraser scored his third of the year in the 93rd minute of play to send the WolfPack to victory and bring the 300 fans inside Hillside Stadium to their feet.

"The goal was fantastic but I also loved the way the guys played, loved the way they rebounded from a tough loss last night," said WolfPack head coach John Antulov. "I thought from start to finish the boys were really solid and played a good game."

The win was an important one in the Canada West standings. The result moves both the 'Pack and Spartans to a record of 3-1-4 on the season where they sit in a tie for first place in the West Division standings on 13 points.

"For us it's a process, we look at each game separately so I'm not really looking at top of the table or bottom of the table," said Antulov. "As long as we're playing really good football and doing what we need to, then good things will happen."

TRU outshot the Spartans 14-7 on the night and controlled a majority of the play, but resolute defending from the visitors appeared to be sending the teams home with a share of the points before the heroics from Fraser.

In the third minute of time added on, a pass from Daniel Sagno sent Ryan Lewis in behind the Spartan defence. Lewis whippef in a first-time cross that found its way perfectly onto the head of Fraser, who nodded the ball into the back of the net for the victory.

"Overall we missed some really good scoring opportunities," said Antulov. "James was fighting it a little bit but I was so happy for him to get it at the end. I think over the course of the game we deserved three points."

Next up for Trinity Western is a pair of home games against the UVic Vikes. The WolfPack meanwhile, will also stay home where they will prepare to welcome the Fraser Valley Cascades for a pair of games on October 8-9.
