Tokyo Paralympic Games on the horizon for Stewart

KAMLOOPS – Over ten years after he last suited up for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, Greg Stewart has earned the chance to compete on the world's largest stage at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

A decorated alumnus of the WolfPack men's basketball program, Stewart will compete for Canada in the men's F46 shot put in Tokyo. After a successful stint with the men's sitting senior volleyball team for several years, a switch to shot put in 2017-18 has helped Stewart earn the first Paralympic berth of his career.

A Kamloops local, Stewart enjoyed a record-breaking career with the 'Pack. The seven-foot-two post played for TRU for five seasons from 2004-06 and 2008-11. Helping the team transition from the BCCAA to U SPORTS – the highest level of university sport in Canada – Stewart became the first Canada West award winner in program history when he claimed back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honours in 2009-10 and 2010-11. In the final year of his WolfPack career Stewart was further recognized on the national stage as the top defensive player in all of Canada.

The defensive stalwart's name is still littered throughout the conference record books. Stewart ranks tenth in rebounds (775), fifth in rebounds-per-game (9.337), second in blocked shots (174) and fifth in double-doubles (34) in Canada West career history.

Stewart has been a major figure on the world stage ever since making the switch to shot put. In 2018, his rookie season, Stewart was ranked No. 1 in the world. In 2019 he captured a silver medal at the IPC World Championships with a Canadian record-setting throw of 16.30 metres.

After starting his Games on August 31 with a preliminary round, the final of the men's F46 shot put is set for September 1 at 6:30 p.m. pdt.
