Vikes pull away late to best WolfPack

KAMLOOPS – In what was a much closer match for most of the night than the final score would suggest, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team fell by a score of 71-51 at the hands of the UVic Vikes on Friday.

What was just a five-point Vikes lead with three minutes left to go in the third quarter grew and grew the rest of the way. The visitors outscored the 'Pack 22-10 down the stretch including going 9-19 from the floor while holding TRU to shooting 2-18 over the final eight minutes of play.

Anneke Cairnie was a warrior on the night for the 'Pack, racking up 13 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Kyla Smith, Maggie Fehr and Karishma Rai all added six points as a balanced WolfPack attack saw nine different players get on the scoreboard.

Ashlyn Day scored a game-high 21 points in 27 minutes of action. While Calli McMillan and Tana Pankratz both added 13 for the Vikes.

A first quarter that saw both Day and McMillan knock down a pair of triples ended with the score 17-13 in favour of the Vikes. Cairnie kept the 'Pack in it early with six points and four rebounds.

It was the WolfPack's turn to get hot from beyond-the-arc in the second quarter and a three-pointer from Karishma Rai to make the score 24-21 in favour of the hosts gave the 'Pack their first lead of the night. Day took over from there though, scoring the next 13-straight points for the Vikes to give them a 34-28 lead going into the halftime break.

After the teams traded buckets for much of the third quarter, UVic would go on their game-defining run to edge out to a lead that they would never look back from.

These teams will be back in action tomorrow inside the Tournament Capital Centre with a scheduled tip-off of 5 p.m.
