KAMLOOPS – They fought back throughout the middle portion of the game and dominated the third quarter but it wasn't enough for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team to pick up the win in an 81-56 loss to the UVic Vikes.
After getting into a 21-point hole early, the WolfPack fought back to win both the second and third quarters before the wheels came off in the final frame.
The host Vikes were on fire from long range, knocking down 42 per cent of the three pointers they attempted while also dominating the battle on the glass with 57 rebounds to the TRU's 30.
Kyla Smith with 13 points and
Priyanca Sundher with 12 led the way offensively for the WolfPack. Sundher went 4-9 from long-range in the game to continue a strong second half to her season that has seen the first year become a threat from deep.
A trio of Vikes recorded double-doubles in the game with Ashlyn Day scoring 19 points and adding 11 rebounds, Calli McMillan had 16 and 10 while Mimi Sigue added 10 and 10.
The first quarter was all Vikes as the hosts scored the first 19 points of the game before and
Anneke Cairnie layup with four minutes left in the quarter put and end to the Vikes run.
UVic held a 29-8 lead after the first frame before the WolfPack fought back in the second. Smith knocked down a pair of three pointers and
Maggie Fehr had six points as the 'Pack outscored UVic 18-16 in the second.
TRU continued that run into a third quarter where they outscored the Vikes 22-15. The WolfPack had four three pointers in the quarter and cut the lead all the way to 11 points with a
Jessica Orr layup with just over two minutes left in the third.
Much like the first quarter the Vikes dominated the fourth frame however, and held the WolfPack to just eight points in the final ten minutes to take the 25-point victory.
The WolfPack will play their final game of the regular season tomorrow when they head to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds at 3:00 p.m.
