Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Vikes offence overwhelms WolfPack

KAMLOOPS – The visiting UVic Vikes were lights out from the floor all game long as they handed the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team a 104-70 loss inside the Tournament Capital Centre.

UVic knocked down 39-69 shots they attempted from the floor and shot a ridiculous 57.6 per cent from beyond-the-arc as the highest scoring team in the Canada West conference ran away with the victory.

A close game after the first quarter was blown wide open down the stretch as the Vikes outscored the 'Pack 85-54 over the final thirty minutes of action.

Rookie Gavin Reis was a bright spot for the WolfPack with the first year post player scoring a career-high 19 points in his 23 minutes of action. Brendan Sullivan added 14 points and three assists while Asher Mayan rounded out the WolfPack's top scorers with 12 points.

The Vikes' backcourt was the epitome of efficient in the victory. Diego Maffia shot 57 per cent from the floor en route to 25 points while fifth year Scott Kellum went 6-7 from long range to score 24 points in just 21 minutes of action.

A disjointed first quarter saw the WolfPack keep things close. Six different members of the 'Pack got on the scoreboard and TRU actually held the lead for over half the frame before the Vikes started to heat up at the end of the first to take the 19-16 lead after the opening ten minutes.

UVic removed any doubt from the game early in the second quarter. The Vikes went on a 13-1 run in the opening five minutes of the quarter during which Kellum knocked down a pair of three pointers to stretch their lead to 15.

The WolfPack fought back and almost cut the deficit to single digits multiple times the rest of the way, but were unable to claw their way back against the division-leading Vikes.

The result moves UVic to 11-1 on the season while the WolfPack fall to 4-11.

These teams will meet tomorrow evening inside the TCC with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m.
