Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Young WolfPack go shot-for-shot with Spartans in home opener

QUICK FIRE
  • A Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team that features 10 rookies on their roster came up just short of a season-opening victory in a 66-59 loss to the Trinity Western Spartans in Kamloops.

LEADERS
  • Veterans Danijela Kovacevic and Kelsey Cruz led the 'Pack offensively with 14 and nine points respectively. Making their Canada West debuts, Olivia Randall (8 points), Jocelyn Orr (7), Sydney Vollrath (6) and Grace Hansen (6) all hit the ground running.
  • TWU's main scoring threat was Hailey Roekel who knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to a 20-point night. Jayden Gill also hit double-digits with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Q1: A strong second half of the opening frame allowed the Spartans to hold a five-point lead through ten minutes. Abatayo and Roekel each had six points while Kovacevic answered with five for TRU. The Spartans snagged 14 rebounds to the WolfPack's nine.
  • Q2: A 13-2 run to start the second quarter powered a WolfPack comeback. Keyed by four each from Vollrath and Cruz during that run, the 'Pack scored 21 in the frame to take a 34-32 lead into the halftime break.
  • Q4: After TRU entered the fourth still holding that two point lead it was a pair of threes late from Roekel that swung the game. With TRU holding a 59-58 lead with just over two minutes to play Roekel knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give TWU the victory.

NOTABLE
  • TRU saw rookies accounting for 30 of the team's 59 points.
  • The nine-point loss was TRU's closest result in a season-opener since 2019-20 when they defeated these very same Spartans.

UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle tomorrow night in the TCC with a scheduled tip-off time of 5:30 p.m.
QUOTABLE

  • "They are a very good basketball team. We competed really, really hard but there were definitely moments that we showed our youth and inexperience. Hopefully we can grow from this and continue to get better." WolfPack head coach Todd Warnick.
