Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Last-second heartbreak yet again for 'Pack

QUICK FIRE
  • Once again the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team put themselves in a position to win late, but were just unable to snag victory in a 73-70 loss to the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Asher Mayan continued to shine for the 'Pack in his return from injury as he poured in 19 points. Simon Crossfield went 4-6 from deep to add 14 points while Cyrus Harrison (13) and Denus Bachurin (12) rounded out the WolfPack scorers in double-digits.
  • Jalen Shirley led UBCO with 18 points while Gavin Ashworth and Elan Kimpton-Cuellar finished with 13 points apiece.
  • The Heat won the battle on the glass with 45 rebounds to TRU's 34.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While UBCO led for 90 per cent of the game, the 'Pack made things interesting late. Trailing by nine with just over three minutes left to play, a Denys Bachurin trey keyed an 8-0 WolfPack run during which Mayan had five points to bring TRU to within one point with one minute remaining on the clock.
  • The WolfPack defence came up with a big stop and TRU had a chance to take the lead in the final 20 seconds of play, but the WolfPack's attempt was blocked by UBCO.
  • After UBCO knocked down a pair of free throws TRU had a last-gasp chance to tie the game at 73 but were unable to hit the three-pointer.

NOTABLE
  • The loss is the seventh time this season – and second game in a row – that the 'Pack have lost by six points or less.
  • TRU falls to 3-8 on the season with the loss while the Heat move to 3-10. The WolfPack, Heat and Lethbridge Pronghorns all sit one game behind UFV for the final playoff spot in the conference.

UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle again tomorrow in Kelowna with a scheduled tip-off of 3:00 p.m.
