Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – While it's only three weeks into the season, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team have what could prove to be two pivotal matches at home this weekend when they play host to the UFV Cascades.
Taking place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday inside the TCC, the games will see the 2-2 WolfPack host a 2-2 UFV squad that they are currently tied with for third place in the Pacific Division.
With a more regional schedule this year that will see TRU play every school in B.C. three times and have just one weekend of crossover play with a school from the Prairie Division, every game becomes that much more important for the 'Pack. The top five teams from the Pacific Division will qualify for the CW playoffs.
The 'Pack hung tough with a nationally ranked opponent last weekend. TRU stuck right with the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night, trailing by as few as two points in the third quarter before fading late.
Dami Farinloye was named the WolfPack Athlete of the Week after he tallied 15 points, six rebounds and five assists Friday and another 17 on Saturday.
The Cascades swept the UBC Okanagan Heat in Abbotsford this past weekend, earning victory by scores of 80-66 and 66-58.
TRU took both matches that the two teams played last season in Kamloops.
Denys Bachurin played the hero on Friday night with 23 points in an 83-67 win before the WolfPack wrapped up the sweep with a gritty 64-58 victory Saturday.
3 Things
1: Papa Murphy's will be serving up pizza inside the TCC all season long.
2: All high school student-athletes in Kamloops and Merritt have a High School All-Access Pass that allows them free entry to every WolfPack game this season.
3: The WolfPack are 4-6 in their last 10 games against UFV.
By The Numbers
15.5: Asher Mayan leads the 'Pack with 15.5 points per game.
72.5: UFV is allowing just 72.5 points per game, giving them the sixth best defence in the conference so far this season.
10.8 & 9.8: The two teams like to force teams out of their comfort zone, sitting third (UFV) and fifth (TRU) in the conference in steals per game.
