Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack outlast Timberwolves for victory in OT

QUICK FIRE
  • 14 points in overtime powered the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team to a clutch 88-85 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George Sunday afternoon.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was an incredibly balances scoring attack for TRU with five guys scoring in the double digits. The 'Pack were led offensively by Asher Mayan (17 points), Steve Stinson (16), Denys Bachurin (15), Erin Chamble (12) and Cyrus Harrison (11).
  • Evgeny Baukin led all scorers with 22 points for the Timberwolves followed by Chris Ainsley who knocked down five three-pointers to finish with 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • There wasn't much to separate the teams all night long as the two B.C. rivals went toe-to-toe for 45 minutes.
  • The WolfPack led after a scrappy first quarter. TRU forced the Timberwolves into making nine turnovers in the opening ten minutes and Chamble put in a layup in the final seconds of the frame to give the 'Pack a 15-14 lead.
  • A tight second quarter did nothing to separate the two squads. Bachurin kick-started the quarter with an early three pointer and Stinson scored five in the frame but the Timberwolves responded through Ainsley (6 points) and Baukin (5) to keep the WolfPack lead at just 33-31 at the break.
  • Both offences came to life in the latter portion of the third quarter. UNBC knocked down back-to-back three pointers to take a 43-41 lead, their first since the opening stages of the game. That advantage was short lived however, as Mayan knocked down a pair of triples and Chamble once again scored right at the end of the quarter to give TRU a 56-55 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • A three from Bachurin gave the 'Pack a commanding 74-67 lead with three minutes left to play but that would be the last points TRU scored in regulation as the Timberwolves stormed back to tie the match and send the game to overtime.
  • A balanced offence and tough defence gave TRU the edge in the extra frame. Bachurin, Mayan, Dami Farinloye, Evan Smith, Stinson and Erin Chamble all scored for a TRU team that took the lead with 30 seconds left through a Farinloye layup and never looked back en route to the victory.
NOTABLE
  • The WolfPack won the battle on the glass 50-38, including grabbing 18 offensive rebounds to UNBC's five.
  • The win secures TRU's first 2-0 start to Canada West play since 2019-20.
  • The game was the third in a row between TRU and UNBC that finished with a winning margin of five points or less.
UP NEXT
  • TRU will return to the TCC as they get set to host the UBC Thunderbirds Nov. 8-9.
