Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Thunderbirds outlast WolfPack in gritty affair

QUICK FIRE
  • They kept it to within single digits for much of the game but in the end the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds in an 84 to 61 loss inside the TCC.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Denys Bachurin was a force for the 'Pack with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals. Dami Farinloye went 7-13 from the floor to add 15 points while Asher Mayan finished with 11.
  • Fareed Shittu led all scorers with 18 points on the night. Adam Olsen went 3-4 from long-range to add another 17 while Micah Jessie finished with 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow start to the night offensively hurt the 'Pack in the first quarter. TRU started an ice cold 3-16 from the floor as a team to allow the Thunderbirds to jump out to an early 17-8 lead through ten minutes of play.
  • The 'Pack found a way to kick start that offence in the second frame. Farinloye had eight points and Mayan five as a bucket from Cyrus Harrison with 2:30 remaining in the quarter brought the 'Pack back to within two at 28-26. The T-Birds pulled away later in the frame to take a 39-30 lead into the halftime break.
  • It was more of the same in the third quarter as TRU went toe-to-toe with UBC. Six points in the frame from Bachurin sparked TRU as they never trailed by more eight points en route to trailing just 60-52 at the end of the third quarter.
  • Unfortunately for fans of the 'Pack, the fourth quarter belonged to the Birds. UBC outscored TRU 24-9 in the final frame en route to securing the 23-point victory.
NOTABLE
  • The turnover battle went the way of UBC as the visitors scored 26 points off 22 TRU turnovers.
  • The loss is TRU's first of the season - they are now 2-1 - while the T-Birds move to 3-0.
  • UBC is ranked No. 2 in the nation.
UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will do battle tomorrow night inside the TCC with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
