Box Score 2 KAMLOOPS – Out on the road to continue their preseason, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team played four games in the Lower Mainland over the weekend - taking on both U SPORTS and collegiate competition.
GAME 1: TRU 1, UBC 3
A solid start to the match saw the 'Pack rebound after dropping a close first to take the second. TRU couldn't keep that momentum rolling however en route to the 3-1 defeat.
"We were led in the middle by
Britain Ward with eight kills and two blocks," said WolfPack head coach
Pat Hennelly. "Top scorer on the outside was
Brendon Lord with 12 kills.
Walker Sodaro ended with 35 assists as well as a couple of blocks and an ace."
GAME 2: TRU 1, UBC 3 (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 19-25)
Later on in the day TRU took on UBC once again and battled the T-Birds closely.
"That was our best volleyball of the preseason so far," said Hennelly. "We are working with a lot of new players in the lineup, so it was refreshing to see some things clicking on the court."
Dylan Annala and
Rylan Ibbetson led the way offensively with 12 and 11 kills respectively while rookie
Lincoln Wagner hit .429 with an ace and four blocks.
The WolfPack will be back in action for a pair of games on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they face the UFV Cascades and the Douglas College Royals in Vancouver.
GAME 3: TRU 0, UFV 3 (14-25, 19-25, 23-25)
On Saturday the WolfPack played a pair of games, the first of which was a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the UFV Cascades. The WolfPack got progressively better as the game went on, just barely falling in the third set.
Matthew Hamilton hit .435 per cent with 14 kills in the match.
Walker Sodaro racked up 23 assists.
"After a really slow start today we got into a rhythm.
Matthew Hamilton led us offensively with 16.5 points.
GAME 4: TRU 3, DOUGLAS 1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23)
The WolfPack ended their weekend with a victory over Douglas College. After a slow start the team roared back to reverse sweep the Royals.
Rookie
Alex Howard had a team-high 11 kills for TRU while
Brendon Lord finished with nine total points. In a return to action against his teammates from last year, setter
Tyson Koop recorded 17 assists.
"A couple of rookies made big contributions," said Hennelly. "
Drew Pike with 14 assists and two service aces while
Keenan Brulotte had four kills on seven swings to go along with three blocks."
TRU will play their first regular season games of 2024-25 on the road in Manitoba before returning to Kamloops for their home openers on November 1-2.
