Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

WolfPack come up just shy in tight contest with Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  • After an incredibly entertaining second half that saw the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team and the TWU Spartans go bucket-for-bucket, the Spartans found the edge to come up with the win 87-78 on Thursday evening in the TCC.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Cyrus Harrison led the scoring for the 'Pack with 12 points to go along with his five rebounds. Asher Mayan and Evan Smith added 11 points apiece to the WolfPack scoreboard and Dami Farinloye fell just short of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points. Playing a significant role all over the court was Simon Crossfield who had four assists and three steals. Reuben Wright was a force at the rim with three blocks in the game.
  • Jerric Palma recorded a game-high 25 points, 21 of those coming from beyond the arc. Josh Belvin came alive in the second half of the game with 18 points. Connor Platz came up with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while also putting up three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter saw the Spartans on fire from beyond the arc, hitting five quick three-pointers to gain an early lead over the WolfPack with Palma hitting a trio of treys to lead the way. The 'Pack came back to close the gap to four points but another big three from Palma had the Spartans up 24-17 at the buzzer.
  • Palma's hot streak from beyond the arc continued in the second quarter, contributing to his five three-pointers in the first half. Despite the WolfPack's best efforts, both defensively and offensively, they were unable to take the lead. Crossfield, Mayan and Smith led the 'Pack in the second quarter with notably big plays – from Smith's big corner three to Crossfield's diving steal. The Spartans went into halftime up 40-29.
  • In an exhilarating third quarter, the WolfPack came up big to overcome a double-digit deficit. Harrison led the charge with nine points. A 12-2 run for the 'Pack saw them cut the lead to as little as a single point. The run was accentuated by a massive block from Reuben Wright and another corner three-pointer courtesy of  Smith. The Spartans held a slim 63-60 lead entering the fourth frame.
  • In that fourth frame the WolfPack tied the score twice, with a Farinloye three pointer knotting the game at 77-77 with two-and-a-half minutes to go. That was as close as the TRU would come however as Belvin scored eight of the game's final 11 points to allow TWU to pull out the 87-78 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The result was an important one in the CW standings as TRU drops to 6-7 while TWU moves up to 5-7.
  • The Spartans were 13-27 from beyond the arc in the game as a team, knocking down 48.1 per cent of their attempts.
  • The WolfPack outscored TWU 40-28 in the paint.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will remain home to take on the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UVic Vikes Saturday evening inside the TCC in a game that starts at 6:00 p.m.
