Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

WolfPack push No. 1 ranked Vikes to the limit

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team came oh so close to pulling off the upset of the season as they nearly toppled the reigning CW Champion and nationally No. 1 ranked UVic Vikes in an 87-84 Vikes' win Saturday.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Dami Farinloye led the 'Pack in scoring with 27 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Reuben Wright added 11 points and six rebounds to the tally sheet and Cyrus Harrison contributed 10 points and eight rebounds of his own.
  • The Vikes were led by Renoldo Robinson who scored a game-high 33 points and six steals. Ethan Boag added 23 points and four rebounds for the Vikes with Griffin Arnatt chipping in another nine points and six rebounds to aid in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter saw the Vikes and the WolfPack going bucket-for-bucket down to the wire. Crossfield, Farinloye and Asher Mayan combined for 18 points in the first, with Crossfield hitting a buzzer beater three to give the 'Pack the lead 27-25 going into the second. Robinson started the game off hot, draining 12 points for the Vikes in the first quarter.
  • The second quarter did little to change things with UVic eking out a 44-41 edge heading into the second half.
  • The quick pace from the first quarter returned in the third as the two teams went shot-for-shot throughout. A clutch quartet of threes from Crossfield, Stinson, Smith and Harrison gave TRU the lead at 65-60 with under a minute left in the quarter before Robinson and Arnatt both knocked down late three to restore UVic's edge.
  • Neither team took their foot off the gas going into the fourth quarter as the game came down to the very last seconds. A Denys Bachurin three gave TRU an 80-73 edge with five minutes left to play. Powered by eight points from Robinson the Vikes ripped off a 12-2 run down the stretch to give themselves a three-point lead. The WolfPack had a shot to tie in the game in the dying seconds but couldn't find a way to force the game to overtime.

NOTABLE
  • The loss moves TRU to 6-8 and brings the undefeated Vikes to 12-0.
  • TRU is now fourth in the Pacific Division of CW men's basketball. The top five teams in the division qualify for the postseason.
  • Farinloye's 27 points are a new career high for the product of Winnipeg.
