WolfPack clinch playoff berth with victory over rival Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team earned an important victory on the road Friday, taking down the UBC Okanagan Heat by a score of 86-73 in Kelowna.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Four different players hit double digits in scoring for the 'Pack as the team dominated the fourth quarter to secure victory. Asher Mayan was 4-5 from long range to score 12 points while also snagging six rebounds. Dami Farinloye added 17 points and four assists while Cyrus Harrison and Denys Bachurin recorded 13 and 10 points respectively.
  • Jalen Shirley had a team-high 22 for UBCO while also adding six assists. Lamine Conde chipped in a further 14 for the host Heat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw the WolfPack holding a slim 20-19 edge after the opening ten minutes of play. Mayan had seven points and the WolfPack attempted 11 free throws in frame to take the edge.
  • With little to separate the teams in the second quarter, TRU took a 38-33 advantage into the second half. Mayan tallied eight points in the opening five minutes of the third as TRU stretched that lead all the way to 15 points before the Heat responded. UBCO scored 22 of the game's next 28 points to not only erase the deficit but actually lead 62-61 heading into the fourth.
  • TRU refused to let the game slip away. After the teams traded buckets through the opening half of the frame, Farinloye sparked a 17-4 WolfPack run to close the match, during which he scored seven points of his own, to allow TRU to pull away late for the 13-point victory.
NOTABLE
  • The win clinches a playoff berth for TRU. Sitting at 9-8 on the season, the 'Pack will return to the postseason for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.
  • The victory was also important for the 'Pack in the annual battle for the Presidents' Cup. A competition between the two schools in basketball, soccer and volleyball, the men's edition of the 2024-25 Presidents' Cup will come down to the final game between the two schools tomorrow in Kelowna with annual bragging rights on the line.
  • With 23 points on the night, Asher Mayan moved to 906 career points in his time with the 'Pack. He becomes just the fifth member in program history to break the 900 point mark, following Joe Davis (1154), Greg Stewart (1024), Josh Wolfram (962) and Micheal Rouault (951).
  • The WolfPack are 18-13 all-time against the Heat.
UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle again tomorrow in Kelowna with a scheduled tip-off of 1:00 p.m.
