Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Monumental effort sees WolfPack score victory over No. 4 ranked UBC

QUICK FIRE
  • It was a night to remember for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team that secured a massive 85-74 victory over the No. 4 nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds Friday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jayden Stephens was electric for TRU, piling up 31 points to lead the way. Dami Farinloye added another 18 points along with eight rebounds and four assists. Reuben Wright added nine points and eight rebounds while Steve Stinson racked up nine points and seven assists.
  • Nikola Guzina powered the Thunderbirds attack with 22 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five points from Gavin Reis led the way for the WolfPack early. TRU finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run to turn what was at one point a five-point deficit into an early 20-18 WolfPack lead.
  • Once again it was a late run from the 'Pack that led the way in the second half. With the game knotted up at 30-30, the WolfPack closed the first half on an 11-3 run that was capped off by a buzzer-beating lay-up by Stephens, who grabbed a rebound and sprinted the length of the floor to convert at the rim as time expired.
  • After the Thunderbirds rallied in the third to take a 59-58 lead into the final frame, TRU dominated the fourth.
  • Farinloye and Stephens had 11 and 10 points each as TRU took the lead off a Thomas Olsen layup with eight mintues left on the clock and never surrendered it en route to the victory.
NOTABLE
  • The 31 points for Stephens ties him for the 14th highest-scoring game in the program's Canada West history.
  • The win was TRU's fourth in Canada West play against UBC and their first over the Thunderbirds since a victory in the 2015-16 Canada West semifinal.
  • TRU moves to 2-0 on the season with the win.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson)
  • I thought our guys came out and played really hard and played together. We were telling them all week that we didn't have to do anything miraculous to come out here and get a win, we just had to do our job and that's what the guys did today.
  • ON JAYDEN STEPHENS' BIG NIGHT. Jayden Stephens just finds a way to put the ball in the hoop for us, he's a bit of a natural scorer and down the stretch he didn't shy away from the moment, he hit some big shots, made some big plays and that's what we needed from him.
  • Our guys play really hard and that's something that we hang our hat on. We are going to come out and compete, defend, finish plays on the glass. Everyone that's out there playing for us knows that that's what we have to do to be successful and they embrace that. That's become our identity and I'm proud of all the guys' efforts in finding a way to get a win today.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will look to stay hot when they face this same T-Birds team tomorrow night in Vancouver in a game that gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
