Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Scott’s record-setting performance and Olsen’s career night combine to extend WolfPack win streak

QUICK FIRE
  • A player at the start of his WolfPack tenure and one nearing the end were the story Saturday night as Cason Scott and Thomas Olsen led the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team to a seventh-consecutive victory in a 81-66 triumph over the TWU Spartans.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Scott, a rookie from Westsyde Secondary, set the new program single-game rookie scoring record with 28 points on the night. Olsen, a fifth-year forward and team captain, set new career-highs in both assists (8) and rebounds (14). Jayden Stephens (14 points), Dami Farinloye (13) and Steve Stinson (10) also hit double digits in scoring for the 'Pack.
  • Connor Platz and David Mutabazi led the charge for TWU with 11 points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Inserted into the starting lineup, the Kamloops local Scott delivered starting the game off by rocking the rim for a two-handed jam, he would add another dunk and a three pointer to end the quarter with seven points. Stephens knocked down a three-pointer right at the buzzer to help TRU hold a 22-18 lead after the first quarter.
  • After capping off the first, Stephens grabbed the opening bucket of the second for TRU, part of five points in the quarter for him. Scott continued to lead the charge for the 'Pack with six more in the frame, including a big three from the elbow to run his total to 13 at halftime. Stinson also chipped in with five in the quarter, including a contested step-back three at the end of the shot clock. Overall, TRU outscored TWU 18-12 in the second to lead 40-30 at half.
  • Three pointers ruled the early parts of the third quarter with both teams hitting three in the opening minutes. But after the long-range barrage ended, it was TRU that pulled away 22-13 in the frame to lead 62-43 after three. Scott hit one of those three pointers and was fouled on another en route to five in the frame, tying his career high at 18 with a quarter left to play. Jayden Green had the highlight of the quarter with an athletic steal on one end, followed by a reserve layup at the other.
  • Scott would set a new career high early into the fourth quarter knocking down a free throw, he would bury nine more in the quarter to finish with 28 points. The WolfPack led by as many as 20 early in the fourth and would eventually go on to win 81-66.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson)
  • "I thought we came out to start the game a little more organized and cohesive as a team on the offensive end of the floor. We got some really good looks, the ball was moving and it always helps when you get some easy ones to start the game. Obviously Cason Scott was tremendous tonight and gave us a huge boost when we really needed it. I was just really happy with our effort from start to finish."
  •  "We know that Cason is a special player and he can do so many things out there for us. He just is a confident player and is getting better every time he steps on the floor. As good as he was, it really was a collective effort for us. There were a lot of guys that played well and contributed and it showed."

NOTABLE
  • The win continues TRU's record streak with their seventh-consecutive victory to start a season. The WolfPack are at the top of the Canada West standings and are one of just three teams across the nation that remain undefeated.
  • Fifth year captain Thomas Olsen set a pair of career-highs with 8 assists and 14 rebounds in the game.
  • In just his fourth career Canada West game, Scott got his first career start, and delivered with a career high 28 points and record best 8 rebounds
  • Earl Akene came on late and finished a tough and-one bucket for his first point in Canada West

UP NEXT
  • TRU is back at home next weekend for two games against the reigning national champion, and current No. 2 nationally-ranked UVic Vikes, starting Friday (Nov 21) with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff inside the TCC.
