Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack set program record with sixth-straight win to start season in front of capacity crowd

QUICK FIRE
  • It was a home-opener for the ages for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team that defeated the TWU Spartans 70-51 in front of well over 1100 fans inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jayden Stephens paced the 'Pack with 22 points in the game. Kamloops local Cason Scott shone in his first-ever university contest at home by scoring 18 points while shooting 5-9 from beyond the arc.
  • David Mutabazi led the Spartans with 13 points while Marcus Shankar added 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was the Spartans that led after a tight first quarter. The visitors started the night on a 7-0 run and while five points from Dami Farinloye and four from Stephens chipped into that deficit, Trinity Western held a 19-15 edge after the first frame.
  • The WolfPack dominated the second, shooting 47 per cent from the floor as a team to outscore TWU 22-9 in the frame. Scott made a trio of three-pointers to lead the way with nine points while fifth-year forward Thomas Olsen added six.
  • After a back-and-forth third quarter, TRU took a 51-41 advantage into the fourth and final frame.
  • The Spartans got to within eight at the midway point of the fourth, but from there it was all TRU. Stephens exploded for 11 points down the stretch as the 'Pack ended the night on a 16-3 run to take the game 70-51.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson)
  • ON THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE TCC "It means a lot. When we get a crowd that comes out and supports our student-athletes and our program the way that they did tonight it just means so much. The guys feed off the energy and just a huge shoutout to all our fans and supporters that came out tonight."
  • ON CASON SCOTT'S PLAY "It was a big night for a Westsyde kid on Westsyde night, it's great to see. Cason is special, we knew that we got a special one when we landed him and I thought he did a really good job of just letting the game come to him. We talked about it before the game that there would be a big crowd and everyone would be out supporting him, but that he just needed to let the game come to him. I thought he did a good job of that and when the opportunities came, he took advantage."
  • ON THE TEAM'S PLAY "We relied on our defensive intensity. We make things difficult on the defensive end of the floor for opposing teams and we just got multiple efforts from multiple guys. When we are out there playing as a unit on the defensive floor, we are going to be a tough out for anybody."
  • ON THE 6-0 START "We just have a group of guys that are extremely competitive, that want to win, want to play the right way and play for each other. I don't think it matters to our guys who is on the floor or who is scoring, we just want to win."

NOTABLE
  • This is the first time TRU has ever started a Canada West season 6-0.
  • The WolfPack sit alone at the top of the Pacific Division with their 6-0 record and are the lone undefeated team left in the conference.
  • Scott's 18 points are a new career-high with the 'Pack for the Westsyde Secondary product.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack and Spartans will do battle again tomorrow night in the TCC in a game that will tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
