Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack win nailbiter to push win streak to five

QUICK FIRE
  • A Jayden Stephens bucket with ten seconds left followed by a clutch defensive stop sent the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team a fifth-straight win to start their season in a 65-64 victory over the MacEwan Griffins.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Dami Farinloye scored a game-high 21 points while also pulling down ten rebounds to lead the 'Pack. Stephens scored 14 and added five steals while rookie - and Kamloops local - Cason Scott scored 13 points in his 17 minutes on the floor.
  • Marcus Moore had 14 points for the Griffins with Diego Presingular adding 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stephens scored six points in the first quarter and a Farinloye three-pointer at the buzzer kept things close, but it was the host Griffins that led 17-14 after the opening ten minutes.
  • The WolfPack completely erased that deficit and then some in the second. Scott led the way with eight of TRU's 20 points in the quarter as the 'Pack outscored GMU by seven points in the frame to lead 34-30 at the halftime break.
  • After the Griffins bounced back in the third to grab a slim 56-55 edge, it all came down to the fourth quarter.
  • The Griffins held onto that one-point lead right up until Stephens took over in the waning seconds. The third-year guard took the ball off a WolfPack frontcourt inbounds play and drove at a pair of defenders before floating a ball over their outstretched arms and into the hoop. MacEwan had a chance to retake their lead with three seconds left on the clock but Reuben Wright stuck close to Presingular and forced the MacEwan guard into a difficult shot that bounced off the rim and out.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson)
  • It wasn't a pretty win by any means, we really had to stick together and show some resiliency and mental toughness to get through that game and come out on the other end.
  • ON THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT We tell the guys all the time that if we can defend and we can rebound that we will always give ourselves a chance to be in games. That's what it came down to tonight, we just found a way to get stops when we really needed to.
  • We were struggling to put the ball in the hoop, it felt like there was a lid on it for long stretches of the game but at the end of the day our defence and rebounding is what we really need to rely on to win games.
  • ON FINALLY PLAYING AT HOME NEXT WEEKEND The guys are looking forward to it. It's been a long stretch on the road for us including the preseason and I know we are excited to get back home and play in front of our home crowd in the TCC.

NOTABLE
  • This is the first time TRU has started a Canada West season 5-0 since 2015-16. The program has never had a 6-0 start in Canada West play.
  • The WolfPack sit alone at the top of the Pacific Division with a record of 5-0.

UP NEXT
  • After five games on the road to start their season, the WolfPack will finally get the chance to play on home court next weekend when they host the TWU Spartans inside the TCC on Nov. 14-15.
