Weekend Story

KAMLOOPS – For the second straight season the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team will travel to the Prairies with their eyes on a playoff run as they get set to hit the road for Winnipeg.

First up for the 'Pack is a play-in game against the Calgary Dinos taking place at 1:00 p.m. pt on Friday, Feb. 13. A win in that game will advance TRU to the conference quarter-finals against the Winnipeg Wesmen at Noon pt on Saturday, Feb. 14.

Entering the postseason with a record of 12-8, their highest win total since the 2015-16 campaign, TRU finished fourth in the pacific division to earn the eighth seed for the playoffs.

Holding an identical record of 12-8, Calgary clocked in at fifth in the prairie division and are seeded ninth.

The 'Pack enter the playoffs riding high after a weekend sweep over the UNBC Timberwolves in their last action of the regular season. Earning wins of 77-60 and 78-76 over the TWolves, TRU put the finishing touches on a conference campaign that saw them tally three wins over both UNBC and UBCO Heat as well as two over the UBC Thunderbirds, the MacEwan Griffins and the TWU Spartans.

Calgary, who have already secured their place in the U SPORTS Final 8 National Championship as hosts of the tournament, finished their season as winners in seven of their final ten games this season. The Dinos split a pair of contests with the MRU Cougars in their most recent action.

Awaiting the winner of TRU vs. Calgary for a Canada West quarter-final matchup are the host Winnipeg Wesmen. Winnipeg won the prairie division with a record of 16-4 and finished the season ranked third in Canada.

TRU was in a very similar position to this last season when they travelled to Winnipeg and defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 78-63 in the play-in game for their first postseason victory since 2016-17 before narrowly falling 70-67 to the Manitoba Bisons in the quarter-finals.
