Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack head into postseason on a high with sweep of TWolves

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team put the finishing touches on a fantastic regular season with a 78-76 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night.
  • Finishing fourth in the Pacific Division with a record of 12-8, TRU will head to Winnipeg next weekend for a Canada West Play-In game with the Calgary Dinos (12-8) on Friday, Feb. 13. The winner will advance to face the Winnipeg Wesmen (16-4) in a CW Quarter-Final contest on Saturday, Feb. 14.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Cason Scott was 7-11 from the floor on his way to a team-high 17 points while also adding seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. Jayden Green added 13 points and seven assists while Jaeden Bynoe knocked down a trio of treys to add 11 points.
  • Justin Sunga was electric for the Timberwolves with 24 points. Chris Ainsley and Wesley Ainu'u added 13 points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow start offensively for both teams saw the Timberwolves up 13-11 over the WolfPack after the first quarter.
  • Both teams came to life in the second as the WolfPack grabbed a slim lead heading into the halftime break. Eight different members of the 'Pack scored in the second, led by Bynoe and Green who both tallied five. A three-pointer from Green in the final minute of the half gave TRU a 36-34 lead after twenty minutes of play.
  • The teams traded buckets throughout the third quarter. A Gavin Reis layup with just four seconds left in the frame put TRU in front by a score of 56-55 heading into the fourth.
  • The fourth quarter came right down to the wire. The WolfPack started the frame with a quick 10-1 run - buoyed by four points from Scott and three apiece from Bynoe and Steve Stinson - before the TWolves fought back. UNBC consistently chipped away at the WolfPack's lead all the way until an Isaiah Bias layup with 37 seconds left gave the hosts their first lead of the quarter with just 37 seconds left. Trailing by one with the game on the line, rookie Cason Scott took over. The Kamloops product knocked down a three-pointer to restore TRU's lead before swatting away Sunga's game-tying attempt with just seconds left to seal the win for the 'Pack.

NOTABLE
  • This marks the second year in a row that the WolfPack have qualified for the Canada West postseason and is the first time they have achieved back-to-back playoff berths since the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
  • TRU's 12 wins are the third-most that the program has achieved in a Canada West campaign and their most since 2015-16.
  • Cason Scott sits second in the program's rookie record book after finishing the season averaging 11.1 points-per-game.
