WOLFPACK BASEBALL PLAYERS (PAST AND PRESENT) OFF TO GRAND FORKS FOR TOURNEY

Sun Devils Baseball (July 20,2012) 010 For the fifth time in six years, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack will be represented at the annual Grand Forks International Labour Day Baseball Tournament.   ‘Pack head coach Ray Chadwick will be taking a group of veterans, rookies and some alumni to the tournament under the banner of the ‘Kamloops Sun Devils.’ Sun Devils Baseball (July 20,2012) 002 The “Sun Devils/WolfPack” will play their first game on Thursday August 30 th against the Langley Blaze. Opening pitch at 8 pm. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Assistant coach Frank Ingram (left) and head coach Ray Chadwick (right) (photo by Andrew Snucins)"]ray2[/caption] “It’s the biggest money tournament and the best competition that you will see in Canada and its a great start to our fall season,” says Chadwick, who’s WolfPack team competes in the Canadian College Baseball Conference.  “ We get to compete against ex pro, NAIA and NCAA teams and players.” [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Dillon Morgan at plate with WolfPack (Ron Henwood photo)"]Dillon Morgan at plate 1 (horizontal  R Henwood)[/caption] Chadwick has lost two veteran WolfPack alumni for this tournament in Will Devick (Kamloops, BC) and Dillon Morgan (Camp Verde, AZ).  “They are two good bats in the middle of a our lineup,” he says.  “ We will be a scrappy bunch with a few power guys in the middle (alumni Ben Bradford, current veteran Dave Hole and newcomer John Apostolo).” [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Chadwick and assistant coach Pat Brown fill out line up cards"]Ray fills out line up card for Sun Devils[/caption] Chadwick says the trip to Grand Forks will put his current players and prospects into a pressure situation immediately.  “ They get to see the highest level of competition right from the start. We then come home and star to compete against other teams but against each other as well.” [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Wataru Asaoka"]Wataru Asaoka (Baseball June 5, 2012) 003[/caption] The WolfPack/Sun Devils will go with a rotation headed by Wataru Asaoka (Japan).  He had a solid summer pitching for the Sun Devils.  He’ll be joined by highly touted American recruit Ryan Rogers and three newcomers: Brendan Miller, Ryan Lehman and Colin Vaughan.  Frank Fisico (Ontario) was a red shirt with the WolfPack last season but will likely earn a spot in the starting rotation this year. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Frank Fisico"]Frank Fisico #2 (Jan 5, 2011)[/caption] Last year, Kamloops had two wins and a loss in the round robin and lost in the first game of the money round to the eventual tournament winner Lewis and Clark. In 2012, the WolfPack will play Lewis and Clark in their second round robin game Friday, August 31st at 8 pm with their final round robin game going Saturday September 1st at  2pm against Parkland. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Mike Juarez and teammate at 2012 CCBC Nationals"]2012 ccbc championships (wolfpack shots from first 2 days) 013[/caption] EXTRA INNINGS: The WolfPack will start their fall workouts September  4th at Norbrock Stadium.  Chadwick is expecting, for the first time in school history that he will have to make a number of cuts as a lot of quality players are vying for spots on the team.  Their first series of exhibition games will be September 7-9 th  in Okotoks, Alberta.   All the games the WolfPack play in the fall are deemed ‘exhibition.’.  Their annual 100 inning game and Alumni game are set for September 22nd and 23 rd at Norbrock.
