The season is over for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's soccer program. The WolfPack concluded their Canada West regular season on Saturday night with a 4-0 blanking by the host Trinity Western University Spartans.
The Pack—who were eliminated officially from playoff contention following a 4-2 defeat at Fraser Valley last night (Oct 18)---wound up with a record of 2-7-4 good enough for seventh spot in the Pacific Division. Trinity Western leads the division at 11-1-1.
The WolfPack started second year keeper
Marissa Young (Calgary, AB) for the first time this season.
TRU was down 1-0 at the half. Jenaya Robertson had two goals for Trinity Western. Rachel Hutchinson and Gabi Short had the others. Ella Sutton earned the shutout making two saves. Young had five saves in the nets for Thompson Rivers.
"I couldn't be more proud of the effort and the energy the players put in," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "Not only today but the entire season. It has been a very positive process this year. We took some really big steps forward and we have to remind ourselves of that. Today, it was a tough result. But it was a result against a team who are ranked number one in the country and are there for a reason. I thought we matched them toe-for-toe in the first half. We conceded an unfortunate goal when we made a mistake on a wet, grass field. Credit to them, one of their seniors made an unbelievable slide tackle to keep the ball out of their net just before half. We were missing a couple of important bodies today (
Camryn Curts—who was injured Friday). But the effort and the energy the players put in. I want to comment the seniors (
Taylor Miller,
Marisa Mendonca and
Natalie Verdiel) on an unbelievable season. More importantly, some of the off field things they have done for the program—building the culture and turning the program around—they were pioneers. They will be a huge miss. Sadly we didn't get the result we wanted this weekend. We are going in the right direction'.
Trinity Western had 25 shots in the contest including 14 in the second half. TRU had two.
This match also saw the Canada West debut of
Madison Tisdale (midfield, Chilliwack, BC).
