The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack don't want to look too far ahead, but they are still in the running for a playoff spot in Canada West women's soccer.
The Pack open up a home and home series with the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on Thursday night (Oct 10). The teams play Thursday at 5:30 PM at Nonis Field in Kelowna. The scene then shifts to Warner Rentals Field at Hillside Stadium for a Saturday noon encounter (Oct 12).
DETAILS:
The WolfPack and Heat are playing the first two installments of the 2019-20 President's Cup series between the two schools. Thompson Rivers won the women's cup last year. Points are awarded on head-to-head competition in Canada West between the two schools in soccer, basketball, volleyball and cross country running.
Thompson Rivers is 1-2-1 on the road and 0-4-2 at home. The Heat are 1-5 at home and 0-4 on the road. TRU beat the Wesmen in Winnipeg for their lone victory of the year. UBCO's lone win came 1-0 at home against UNBC.
On Saturday, the WolfPack will pay tribute to their three graduating players: Midfielders
Taylor Miller (Kamloops, BC),
Marisa Mendonca (Penticton, BC) and defender
Natalie Verdiel (Powell River, BC). Mendonca and Verdiel have played the last five straight seasons at Thompson Rivers. They have been team co-captains the last three years. All three players were recruited by former Pack head coach Tom McManus.
Mendonca and Verdiel have both been nominated for major TRU Athletics awards over the last two seasons. The three will be honored at half time on Saturday.
The Heat are playing their final home match on Thursday and will recognize their lone fifth year player: midfielder Madison Ellis of Calgary, AB.
UBCO has two Kamloops Youth Soccer grads on their roster: forward Yvonne Manwaring (1
st year, Valleyview Secondary) and midfielder Kate Cartwright (2
nd year, Westsyde Secondary).
RECORDS OF NOTE:
UBCO: 1-9 and have lost their last three matches and sit in the basement of the Canada West Pacific Division. They are 1-4 in their last five starts.
TRU: 1-6-3 and have lost their last two matches after being unbeaten in three. They are 1-2-2 in their last five matches and are in seventh spot in the Pacific.
WHAT HAPPENED HISTORICALLY BETWEEN THE PACK AND THESE TEAMS:
The WolfPack have not lost to the Heat in two seasons. Last year, the Pack won 2-0 and the teams played to a scoreless tie. In 2017-18, Thompson Rivers won both matches by scores of 1-0. UBCO won both matches in 2016 (2-0 and 2-1)

rd year, midfield, Courtenay, BC): is third in Canada West with 31 shots. She leads the Pack in scoring with two goals and one assist.
Taylor Miller: tied for second in team scoring with two points. She has 22 shots on goal

nd year, forward, Smithers, BC): tied for second in team scoring with a goal and one assist and has 14 shos-eight on net.
Danielle Robertson (3
rd year, keeper, Courtenay, BC): second in Canada West with 74 saves. Has a 0-6-3 record with one shutout
UBCO: Catriona McFadden (1
st year, midfield, Calgary, AB): has scored the only goal UBCO has scored this season. Has seven shots on goal
Jessica Ambrosio (2
nd year, forward, Burnaby, BC): started all 10 league matches for UBCO and leads the team with 16 shots-11 of them on goal.
Jillian Hun (3
rd year, midfielder, Delta, BC)t: has started all 10 matches and has 15 shots (seven on goal)
Emma Terrillon (2
nd year, keeper, North Vancouver, BC) Has started seven of the 10 UBCO matches this sesaon with a goals against average of 2.21 with 52 saves and a 1-9 record.

The WolfPack will close out their Canada West regular season on October 18-19
th when they pay a visit to the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford, BC and the Trinity Western University Spartans in Langley BC. The Heat close things out against the same schools but play Trinity Western on the first night (Oct 18).
