Women's Basketball looks to stay unbeaten at UBCO

Courtney Sampson
It has been a while since the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's basketball team has tasted defeat at the hands of their closest geographical rivals, the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.  They are hoping to extend that Canada West streak this weekend as the two schools meet in Kelowna.
The Pack and Heat will play Friday morning (Nov 8 10:30 AM) and Saturday afternoon  (Nov 9, 4 PM).

Thompson Rivers is coming off an opening weekend sweep at home over the Trinity Western University Spartans 70-67 and 60-50.   UBCO were on the road at Manitoba where they fell 82-69 and 60-59. The Heat were led by Canada West first star of the week Jaeli Ibbetson (1st year, forward, Kelowna, BC) who leads the Canada West in rebounding with 15 per game and is second in points per game at 20.5.

The WolfPack's main offensive weapons are Emma Piggin (5th year, guard, Kamloops, BC) who is averaging 15 points per game. Jordin Wilkinson (4th year, guard, North Battleford, SK) and Jordon Haggerty (3rd year, guard, Saskatoon, SK) average 12.5 and 11 points respectively.    Piggin and Haggarty lead in rebounds with eight and four per game.

Thompson Rivers has a five game winning streak against UBCO going into this weekend.  They last lost to the Heat on November 26, 2017 when they fell 60-49.

Last season at the Tournament Capital Centre (November 23-24)., TRU won the opening afternoon 87-61 in overtime led by Michelle Bos and 19 points. Leilani Carney (5th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) had 14 points with Haggerty contributing 10.  The following day,  Thompson rivers was a 69-65 victor thanks to 21 points from Bos and 18 courtesy of Haggerty.

This is the latest chapter of the "President's Cup" series between Thompson Rivers and UBCO.  The two schools are tied at a win and a tie.  Both these results were in women's soccer.  There was no decision between the two schools in cross country running.   Thompson Rivers is the defending men's and women's champions in the President's Cup.
