KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team will be looking to pull off some upsets this weekend when they head to Calgary for 2021-22 Canada West playoff action.

CANADA WEST BRACKET

The road through the playoffs will be a tricky one for the WolfPack who get their postseason underway against the host Mount Royal Cougars on Friday at 6:00 p.m. A win against the Cougars would send the 'Pack to a second round game with the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Victory in both of those games and the WolfPack will meet with the Fraser Valley Cascades on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for the chance to play in the Canada West Final Four.

Before facing the Cascades and Wesmen, the 16th seed WolfPack must first take on the 11th seed Mount Royal Cougars. TRU went 1-17 in the regular season to finish seventh in the West Division while Mount Royal compiled a mark of 5-11 en route to finishing fourth out of the five teams in the Central Division.

An extremely young team, the WolfPack struggled throughout much of the season but did have their moments to shine. The 'Pack took down the UBC Okanagan Heat 77-60 in late November for their only win of the year but lost by only three points to both second-place Trinity Western and third-place Victoria in the second semester.

Three of MacEwan's five wins on the year came against the last-place MacEwan Griffins, but the team did pull off a pair of impressive upsets in back-to-back games. First the Cougars took down the first-place Alberta Pandas by a score of 80-79 before defeating the third-place Calgary Dinos 52-46.

Recent history is on the side of the WolfPack however, their other win this season came against MRU 80-79 in a preseason match inside the TCC.

By the Numbers

9: TRU is 9-1 all-time in conference play against the Cougars.

2.9 Danijela Kovacevic finished 11th in program history with 2.9 assists-per-game.

38.9% – Kamloops product Jessica Orr knocked down 21 of her 54 three-point attempts, the second-best mark in program history.

13.2 – Jenika Martens is a force for the Cougars. Her 13.2 ppg was the second-best mark in Cougar history.

23.6 – The WolfPack's offence hinges on whether their efforts from deep are falling, they attempted the sixth-most three point shots-per-game in the conference.

13.8  – Mount Royal cranks up the pressure defensively, they average the most steals-per-game in the conference.

Coach's Take
Head Coach, Ken Olynyk

On playoff preparations

"The most important thing is to continue to do what we've done, there's no point in changing things now. We've had some success, maybe haven't won a tonne of games, but we've been close against good teams. A couple of our games have come down to the last shot so the key is to just continue to do what we do."

On beating Mount Royal in the preseason.

"It gives us some confidence yes, but most importantly it gives us a sense of familiarity. Our team knows who their players are, they've played against them so that always helps you be more successful."
